Need help. Dont want to stop CDing toddler

My 24mo DS is wetting through everything. (well maybe not everything - it just feels that way ) No its not wicking. The diapes just cant hold the amount of pee.

I think he doesnt go as often so when he does go the flood gates open.

I use:
For outings - FB (3layer insert) with a hemp doubler - usually leaks

For naps - FB (3layer insert) with a hemp doubler & an infant PF - often leaks

Softbums - I only have one bec he always saturates the whole thing even with their doubler in it. So I never ordered more.

I have various PUL/wool/fleece covers under which I put a snugglebottom fitted with a hemp doubler. One pee & he is soaked - not necessarily leaking, but I have to be so watchful it is driving me crazy. We have had decent luck with the flip (stay dry insert). I would really like to go all wool/fleece except for the FB on outings.

I did find a nite time solution.

Today he napped with a PUL/snugglebottom combo (fell asleep in car & didnt want to wake to put on FB). I napped with him. When we woke I immediately checked & he was bone dry. We snuggled for 15min & when he stood up the bed was wet. That one pee & all cloth in the diap was completely soaked .

I have a 4mo also & she uses a lot of the same covers with no problem, so I dont think it is a wicking problem.

Help!!

How long have you been using these diapers? Are they new and need more washes for prepping? Any chance they lost some absorbency through detergent buildup or something? I'd suggest you try stripping the diapers, a hot wash or two with vinegar and no soap might help. How is the fit on the covers? If my toddler's comes unsnug at the leg he leaks right out also.

We were at the same point with DS at 25m. We realized he actually had a big bladder and quite a lot of control and that it was our key to potty learn not find new diapers. We started a more scheduled approach to potty learning (Diaper Free Before 3 was helpful) and it was very easy because of the big bladder. We switched to heavier training pants at about six months. Just an idea...

I agree it might be time to get him a potty. Diaper Free Before Three is a good book on earlier potty learning. We've used the method she describes with three of our girls with success. (Well, we're working on one of them right now.) We use a Baby Bjorn Little Potty and put her on it first thing in the morning and also after naps, which is usually when we get the flooded diapers.

As for more absorbancy, have you tried hemp prefolds with hemp doublers. If I am remembering correctly, hemp holds more liquid than cotton.

I was going to suggest the potty too.

another vote for a try at the potty!
Our son has been potty trained since about 26 months, and he showed lots of signs that he was ready well before his 2nd birthday! Good luck, whatever you decide!

OK. I ordered the book - Diap free bf 3.

I knew he would be ready soon bec he never wants me to put a diap on him & screams no diap all the time. (Except for his huge night diap which he cries when I take it off )

Thanks for your help!!!

I know prefolds can be difficult with an active toddler, but I think I'd try toddler prefolds with an exposed PUL (not sandwich) cover (like thirsties, prorap or bummies super brite).

Also, you might try working on getting him to communicate when he pees. I'm sure he notices and feels that huge surge of wetness. Show him a baby sign and use consistent (exaggerated, enunciated) words for the wetness when you change him, and pretty soon you might know exactly when he's ready for a change, without having to check incessantly.

I don't know anything about the other diapers you use, but we use FBs mediums and OSs and I have a great suggestion to stop leaks, as we were having the same problems. Once your LO gets older, they pee more (in volume, not necessarily in frequency), so what you were using when he was younger isn't going to work as well now. You can now order FB inserts with 4 layers which work AWESOME. Also, I recommend getting hemp doublers. Our DD started leaking like crazy at night (and then during the day all over my shirts when I held her), and we got some hemp doublers and no more leaks! Also, could you have build-up on your diapers that would be causing leak issues? If so, you'll want to strip them and it should help a lot. Hope this helps!
