(WIC) Milk Ideas

Okay . . . so I can chose between 1% milk by the gallon, evaporated milk cans or dry milk. We don't even come close to consuming the amount of milk on our checks, so I have a couple questions.

What can I do with evaporated or dry milk? Are they worth having "in stock?"

Is it morally better to just not get food we aren't going to use, or should I get it and donate what we don't use (the canned or dry)?

Thanks ladies

Dry milk can thicken homemade yogurt.

When I got WIC, I got the regular milk & made a lot of rice pudding & yogurt.

I'd get the regular milk. I think when you say what kind of milk you want that is what goes on the check and you HAVE to get that kind all the time. Sure I could use a some canned milk or dried milk but regular tastes so much better so I wouldn't want it all. Second to regular milk would be dried. Dried milk only tastes weird when you drink it straight but if you cook/bake with it or thicken yogurt you won't taste it. Another plus is you can always have some on hand and it stays good quite a while. Health wise I believe the less you process it the better...
Morally i think you shouldn't get what you don't use.

Bleh. Tell them you get horrible gas pains from dairy, and they will cut you boxed soy milk. I know soy is not "ideal" all the time, but for me, we would not use the dairy and I do not want the dairy checks. Plus, with the soy, you get the dry shelf boxes so when they give you 28 quarts (I am not kidding) none of it goes to waste because you can store it for the year.

We only use "milk" for cooking, cereal, and occasional beverage, not a tall glass at each meal, so I think that the minimal amount of soy we're getting from it is okay. Plus, the dry box ones are ORGANIC from Pacific natural foods, you can either get vanilla or plain, and they are yummy!

Actually in Florida our checks list the variety of milks and we can choose any of the three (1%, evaporated or dry). So at least I can chose different ones based on what we need that week.

Thanks for the ideas, I didn't realize you could make yoghurt from dry milk, I may try some of that.

in my state you cant donate anything from wic you have to give it back. i found this out when i told them i had bought some baby food and DD2 didnt eat it. they said i should have given it back and i could have been fined etc for giving it to the community center

i dont get what i dont use.
