Good thermos for hot school lunches???

Hi all - we've been using the Funtainer thermoses as they really are the only ones around (ok, other than the plastic/styrofoam ones). We do the little trick of filling them with boiling water for 10 min before we put in hot food, but find that a) the food's just lukewarm at lunch and b) the mouths are too small.

Any good thermos recommendations?? Thanks!

thermos brand which can be bought in pretty much any retail store selling kitchenware.

Is there no other option other than a thermos? The school my kids go to has microwaves in each classroom and in 1 hallway there is one of those big 40cup coffee urns of hot water if they have something that needs just hot water.

Funtainers are Thermos brand, the ones that haven't really been working for us I might try the adult ones...

how long is the food sitting in it & what kind of food are you putting in?

The food's in it for about 4 hours, and it's hot lunch stuff like meatballs, rice, noodles. Apparently it's not very 'hot' at lunch but really, just lukewarm.

Didn't we used to have huge thermoses when we were little - those massive ones - where the stuff was always steaming hot? Prolly filled with styrofoam

They were actually glass. I remember the cool sound my sister's made when it broke. But you could buy new "guts" that replaced the old.

Can food be warmed up at school?

we have the foogo thermoses and the kids lunches are lukewarm by lunchtime. I don't fill them with hot water first like they recommend though, just because I don't want to dry them out afterwards. Usually what they take is pasta with olive oil and a hot dog on top and they don't like it soggy.

I think the new thermoses just aren't as good as the old ones. We used to use them with really hot soup or tea or whatever and maybe it all stayed hotter because it started out hotter. Not sure.

The foogo colored bottoms don't stay on which I find really annoying so I won't be repurchasing these.

Stanley has great, study ones in a variety of sizes including squat wide-mouth versions. I think they are pretty close to unbreakable and they keep food hot. The downside is that they seal very tightly. I think most kids would need an adult to open the thermos.

Here is what I ordered.

We've got a couple of food containers from Pottery Barn Kids. One is more like the Funtainer one and one is shorter with a wider mouth. They've worked really well for us.

I was planning to order this one this weekend. But now I wonder if it will keep the food warm enough.
