Seeing the Doctor Tomorrow - What to Ask

So, I made an appointment with my family doctor tomorrow but I am really not sure exactly what to ask him. He has already told my husband that they don't really do allergy testing on kids this young (she is 20 months) so I am probably wasting my time with him. If I don't get answers can I call an allergist on my own or do I have to have a referral???

Her issues at this time are gluten, sals, and latex-cross reactives, and possibly fermented foods. I know how to handle the gluten issue and am working on supping for the sals issue, but am pretty concerned about a possible latex allergy or other anaphylactic allergy and would like to get an Epi-pen if she has those. The reason I suspect latex is because when my dh was working as a plumber and had it on his clothes she broke out a lot (I think! It could of been the sals then too, but seemed better when he didn't hold her before changing.) She has reacted to bananas and avocado through my milk by throwing up. She reacted with a skin rash to pineapple she ate herself. Rash showed up within 30 minutes.

The most violent reaction we've seen was from Bubbies pickles which are fermented and someone suggested it might be the fermentation. I didn't see anything in the ingredients that made me leary but it does list "spices".

So far no breathing issues but I don't want to wait until we get to that point to find out. We live 30 minutes out from the hospital and our paramedics aren't exactly speedy imo.

As far as I can tell she has no problems with nuts, fish, shellfish, dairy, or eggs.

The family doc may not be comfortable with testing at such a young age, but he should be able to give a rx for epi-pen based on your observations to latex. Depending on your insurance, you can call direct to allergist. Sometimes it is easier for a doctors a office to get timely appointments.

Thanks.

Actually it went well and he ordered blood work for the RAST test, which she'll have done sometime this week. He is going to test for all the foods she reacts immediately to plus some others.

I took in my notes about all the different issues and he said he thought I was doing a good job with her and made copies of it for his files.

Glad that it went well. I am sure he was impressed with your level of preparedness!
