Ankle pain???

Hey mamas!

With my first pregnancy (this time last year), I was able to keep running right up until I delivered with very little discomfort.

This time, I'm only 25 weeks, but I'm having crazzzyyy ankle pain. I don't notice it when I walk, and there is no swelling in the joints, but as soon as I start jogging, there is it. It almost feels as though my ankles are loose/something is rubbing- very achy. I'm used to running through minor aches and pains, but this is terrible!

Has anyone else experienced anything similar? Any ideas as to what's causing this? I know relaxin levels are high in pregnancy, but it's weird to me that I'm not experiencing symptoms in any other joints. I just want to run :-(

I totally had hip pain in my first 2 pregnancies. Knocked me on the ground in my second. In my third, I was able to run a 10K at 20 weeks pregnant. Like everything else, it is different every pregnancy. Listen to your body. Maybe swimming, an eliptical, walking, or rebounding would be better exercise for you right now?

I know in my head that every pregnancy is different...but it's so hard when you're suddenly having issues doing something you love.

I guess I'm just wondering if this is a typical "preggo" thing, or something to ask my midwife about?

Your midwife will probably tell you it's the relaxin. Have you ever had ankle issues while running in the past? It could be injury-related, but my guess is it's the pregnancy. Weight changes, hormone changes, center-of-balance changes, etc. Maybe try a chiropractor? Different shoes?

I figure as much. I am only concerned because I read something about tarsal tunnel syndrom and pregnancy. If it's just discomfort (loose tendons/effects of relaxin), I'm all for searching out a good support/brace. If it's something that I could potentially aggrevate, then rest is obviously in order. And nope, no history of ankle injury. I actually have pretty good feet (no pronation issues), but of course stride does change with pregnancy. In terms of weight, I've only gained 5 lbs. total so far.

Thank you for your input- I'll have to remember to ask my chiro when I go in tomorrow.
