Looking for reading curriculum-- recs?

So I'm not a homeschooler. But we live abroad and I want to teach my son to read in English before he learns to read in the language here (he's four, by six he will be reading here, so I have some time...). He's very interested in learning to read, so I don't want this discussion to veer into readiness or whether it's a good idea or not.

Anyway. I've heard good things about Saxon Phonics, and I'm looking for a secular program to teach reading. Any recommendations? Has anyone use Saxon Phonics? (I have some specific questions about the kit).

TIA!!

We had really, really good luck with 'Teach your child to reach in 100 easy lessons.' The title sounds kind of hokey, but for ds1 it really was easy and it really did work. He went from barely identifying the sounds of half the alphabet letters to reading at a second grade level in about 9 months. His maximum tolerance for reading lessons were about 10 minutes.

I have heard of many, many people using this book successfully with 4 year olds, as long as they are ready.

Thanks! I will look into that one.

Just seconding the 100 easy lessons book. Not the most exciting or fun approach but it is working for us.

Concurring with the 100 Easy Lessons! Super easy to use and no extra materials required, just you, him and the book. Make sure to read the inro before beginning - the font style and colour are codes to doing it properly.

Thought I'd add that we are using the Bob Books in addition to 100 easy lessons. My little guy is getting a real kick out of reading his own books - no matter the simple story.
