Right now our dining room is a combo eating area/homeschool center. For the homeschool stuff, we have 1 shelf that contains library materials and workbooks/coloring books that we may draw from at various points; 1 tall shelf that contains supplies - notebooks, paints, etc.; 1 rolling cart that was cute but not that useful - has random supplies in it; 1 bookshelf with family-owned kids' books.

For the eating part, we just have the dining room table and a cart that has the microwave on top and a snack shelf on bottom.

Regardless of what I try, we end up with both dishes or food odds & ends (spices, trivets, etc.) and school stuff everywhere. The dining room is chaotic.

So, yeah, we just have to be better about the dishes and things, but I'm wondering if it would work better if I put the homeschool shelving downstairs and just brought it up in a basket once or twice a week. I think that's feasible from a planning/prep standpoint, but I'm wondering if it will feel like more work.
