My knees need advice!

I am totally frustrated with my doc. He was recommended to me by several people. I don't normally see doctors - it had been YEARS since I'd seen a GP. But I went to him because I have shooting pains in my knees and I want to fix it.

Here's my situation: I have had shooting pains in my knees for maybe 6-7 years now. One knee is worse than the other. It is worst when I climb stairs (up and down). It seems to come and go - bad for a month or so, gone for a month or so. It started when I was working out of the house, walking huge flights of stairs in the subway station, sometimes with heels on. My first pg it obviously didn't get better. My second it felt worse, probably the extra weight?

Cut to today - I am fairly average weight, but I weigh more than I ever have. I want to get in shape to be healthy!!! But I can't do many exercises because of the knee pain. I've started swimming and walking but even the walking is making the knee worse.

I went to the doc, he ordered an x-ray. I am fairly sure he never even looked at the x-ray himself. He told me it is _mild_ arthritis (he had the "mild" underlined) He told me to take ibuprofen around the clock whenever the knee hurts. And he basically made me feel like I was making a mountain out of a mole hill.

Is it really unrealistic of me to think I could make the knee better than just taking ibu when it hurts? DID I make a mountain out of a mole hill???

OR

Are there things I can do to make this knee better. Like really better? Are there more natural things I can take? Exercises? I don't even know where to look up info on this. And now I'm afraid to ask another "professional" because my doc made me feel like such a hypochondriac just for being there.

Sorry that the Doc did not listen to you. A visit to a Physical Therapist could help by assessing the knees and developing a home program for stretching and strengthening. They would probably be more understanding of the stressors on your joints given your lifestyle. You may need to call back to the doc office and talk to nurse to get referral for your insurance to cover PT visits. I'd tell them that your stomach can't handle so much ibuprofen (round the clock for awhile is a good way to get problems!).
