any experience, 2 y/o in own bed (not crib) ??

Hello !

I have 2 children. DD is 4, still cosleeps with us for the most part (90+% of the time). DS is turning 2 and sleeps in his own room in a crib, since he was about 1 or so I guess. He nurses 5 minutes, goes in crib awake, talks a bit and goes off to sleep - most of the time throughout the night. I hear him talking to his teddy bear in his sleep once or twice, I check him and he is sleeping.

Here is my question/situation. Wondering when is a good time to transition him to a bed/toddler bed ?
Believe me, I am in NO rush really because after what my DD put me through, and STILL does with sleep...I am SOOOO thankful that he sleeps so well.
BUT: we are so careful not to introduce any toxic, unsafe, etc things to my children for eat, sleep, play. As I was recently researching a safe tea set, it dawned on me...that darn crib is probably not safe. It is a hand-me-down. Most certainly on the recall list because it's a dropside crib. Although I think he is big enough now that isn't an issue. It was a natural wood (would have loved that), but it got painted (SPRAY PAINTED) with a black, rustoleum type paint. UGH.
Secondly, it's HUGE and very girly looking. Ok, those are MY problems.

I am wondering if ANYONE successfully has a 2 year old sleeping in their own room in a BED...which of course means that they could get up and walk around, open the door, etc.

I would rather spend whatever $ we have toward a safe child's bed, then to get a differnet crib...or should I just wait it out at this point? (there's a little part of me just looking for an excuse to get rid of that monstrosity)!

Anyone with any experience with this one ???

DS will be 2 in November and has been in a twin bed since June. We have the head of the bed against a wall and a long bedrail on each side. The foot of the bed is open and we have a small one step, stool at the side of the bed near the foot. He uses that to boost himself up into the bed. He still gets nursed to sleep and then I lay him down in the bed. He wakes 1-2 times per night and just gets up and walks into our room to get me when he wakes up. He also comes into our room when he wakes up in the morning. We've never had to worry about him wandering around the rest of the house. We do make sure the gate at the top of the stairs is closed when we come up to bed just to be safe. One night, DH did forget and when DS was up for the night he showed it to me so I would fix it.

DS is 2.5 and has been in his own bed since he was about 8 months. When he was that young he only napped in it, but we started putting him to bed at night probably shortly after a he turned one. He still wakes up and comes into our room in the middle of the night, but this isn't a problem for us. He used to just yell for us, but now he just walks down the hall. He doesn't get up and play around in his room, though I don't think it would bother me if he did.

We don't have a gate at the top of the stairs (I worry that he would try to climb over it) but I do leave some light on in the hall so he can see clearly.

DS started sleeping in his own room/own bed when he was 2. We had a bed rail on each side then switched to bumpers.

When he woke up he would cry for me - it never crosses his mind to actually, oh, get out of bed. Nope, instantly yells for mommy. Still does it now that he's 4.

But, he was used to sleeping in bed with me so had never been confined by a crib.

I should clarify that he started being in his own bed, he never stayed there for long. We still play mulitple beds.
