mine broke I assume while I was pushing. I don't remember it happening and the pushing stage (which lasted 1.5-2 hours ish) is fuzzy in memory so... it had to have happened then. it broke on its own thogh... no one did it to help or anything.

Both times my water broke before labor started. 12 hours before any labor started in the first case! I guess "ROM" is an appropriate abbreviation for me, after all. We'll see if I go three for three!

With my first, I was at about 6cm, but progressing. The nurses broke my water with the little hook thing. About 10 minutes later, I was complete and starting to push.

With my second, I am not sure how it would be classified. I was around 7 or 8cm, the OB mentioned breaking my water, I was at "that wall" and trying to decide about an epidural or not because I was feeling the need to push and couldn't control it. She was in the process of checking my dialation when it broke (no hook) so I am not sure if she actually caused the water to break, if it was on accident or on purpose. What she said was "ok, you are around 8cm..oops and there's your water." The practice in general was not inclined to interventions (DH was who brought up the epidural) and given her tone when checking me (which I asked for, labor was LONG and I needed to know if I was ANY closer) I am inclined to think it was an accident.

I think they mean that 11% of women waters break before they start labor so don't look for your water breaking to mean labor started not that it won't break and needs to be broken for you. My water was broken in labor by the OB both times. The first time was a situation with a on call OB and I wish I had a doula with me. The second time it was done was right before my ds came out. My OB asked if he could break it so it didn't break on him as he flew out and I said ok to that. I was ok with him doing that. I wonder if he would of been born in the caul or if it would of bust right before he was out.

My mom had her water break before labor for all 3 of her kids. I think it funny that I was the opposite and had it intact at the end.

WithDD1, I started Lea,king 2days before I went into labor. With DD2, it broke all over the bed while I was sleeping, and labor kicked in about an hour later. Guess I'm in the 10% who break before labor.

DDCC... I chose one of the "Yes" answers but not sure which one or if it's actually the right one.

I do NOT agree with that statement how it reads.

As well, IME, my water has broken IN labor on its own twice, and I had AROM without my knowledge or consent with the first one in the hospital at 5-6cm.

I have heard stats like 1 in 6 will have their water break before the onset of labor.

DDCC

DS2- slow high break a couple hours before labor & contractions started.
DS3- induction, OB broke it....twice.
DD1- Sometime while I was in the tub (total of an hour), so either while pushing or transitioning.

With my DD, I had gross membrane rupture without any contractions. pPROM. I didn't start labor until after I'd been checked into the hospital. With DS, they broke it for me when I'd been at an 8 for 2 hours, and then I delivered DS 15 minutes later. His head wasn't able to get down, so if I'd pushed, he may have been born en caul, but they were instructing me not to so I don't know how that would have played out for dilating and such.

I think it is a poorly worded way of saying that only 10% of women will start labor with their water breaking, or that 10% of waters will break prior to labor.

Even if 90% of the bags of waters did not break, babies can be born en caul. So the species could continue

Also DDCC

w/ DS, my water broke spontaneously @ 38weeks without labor- it really was like in the movies where I stood up and "pop" and gush. He was occ posterior, which likely explains why.

w/ DD, my water didn't break until literally 30seconds-1 min before she was born. I was getting into position to push and it broke. She came sliding out FAST with it.

Crashing from December!

My water broke before labor with #3.
My water broke naturally during transition with #4.
My water was artificially ruptured by obs with #1 and #2 (but that doesn't mean it *couldn't* have broken on its own if left alone.)

Mine started a high leak during labor and then the mw decided to break it "more" I guess. But technically, it did break on its own, probably somewhere around 5-6 cm.
#1 was induced with amniotomy at 4 cm.

#2 must have broke during labor but no one remembers it. Probably during transition?

#3 slow leak 4 hours before labor began.

#4 - We'll see.

I agree that they are just trying to say that the movie scene with a flood and then a mad dash to the hospital is not common.

With both of mine water broke just as I was starting to feel pushy, both times I had just shifted posititon from standing to a squat with the urge to push.

I was reading a fascinating article (but I can't seem to find it now!) about how doctors like to break your water because it will speed up labor, but that doing so dramatically increases the chance of a cord prolapse. Also, a lot of the time, there are major blood vessels in the wall of the amniotic sac, and by breaking it with their hook thingie, they could damage one and cause dangerous bleeding.

this is me. Mine broke for every pregnancy (which is 2) way before labor started. For me it was like the movie thing except I didn't go into labor. 1st one took me 46hours and the 2nd 60hours before I had even one contraction. I want to see what is going to happen with this 3rd one.

My water broke on it's own... but it was moments before my baby came flying out... I wouldn't wait for that to go to the hospital or call the midwife.

with dd's uc my water burst while pushing. ds1+2 water was broke by dr. right around 10 cm.

DD1 - water broke on its own and about 5 minutes later contractions started and were immediately 3-4 minutes a part
DD2 - the MW broke my water after 3 hours of contractions at 2-3 minutes a part and i had my daughter and hour later.

DDCC too...

Mine broke sometime while I was hanging out in the tub during labor... At least, when we called the midwife to come on over she checked me and wanted me to get out of the tub because of that (I was at 8 cm then).
