What a day...

So ds2 has been refluxing a bit (he's 3 weeks old), but gaining weight well (2pounds in 3 weeks). However, today he had some tiny specks of blood in his poop, and then he spit up what was probably the entire feed and then some. He's ebf. I took him to the Ped, and she wants to put him on Zantac and for me to go off of dairy. With ds1, I went off of dairy, and I ended up losing way too much weight because I didn't know what to eat, etc...and ended up going to a bunch of specialists because of the weight loss, and having tons of procedures done. After we came home from the Ped's, dh thought he'd take ds1 to the pool as we've been so busy, he hasn't had enough active fun. Well, it was kind of late, and cool, and apparently ds got sick! So now he's got a fever, not high, but I'm terrified of my newborn getting sick and a fever. I have no way of separating them, either...what to do??? If my newborn gets a fever, do they really do a spine tap or what is done ... I know it's considered an emergency. Also, ds1 has to have nebulizer treatments when he's got a cold...so every time there's a hint of a cold, I just get anxious. UGH! And dh is starting a new job next week, so I'll be alone with 2 possibly sick kids, and my mom has her own medical issues right now. Any advice? -- first to calm myself down!

Ok, first, your ds could just be chilled. And may be fine in the morning.

Second, if it is something contagious, remember you have been exposed too and are innoculating your baby through your breast milk. When my twins were just one month old everyone in the house got horribly sick - cramps, fever, vomiting, the works. The babies stayed perfectly healthy.

I think they only do a spinal tap if it is a really high fever.

As for the diet, if you can find replacement fats for dairy, like olive oil, you may be able to keep weight on. I am off dairy for one of my babies, but I can still have yogurt, butter and cream in my coffee, which helps. There's also peanut butter, hummus, avocado, and olives, all of which have a fair amount of fat. And nuts - fat and protein!

Hope tomorrow is a better day!

Ds1 woke up and has a much higher fever ... not sure how high, because the crappy digital thermometer always measures too low, and the good glass one takes 5 minutes, so can only do it when he is asleep..but probably around 102. He absolutely refused to take ibuprofen...and I give it because fever makes you breathe faster, and since he gets cold induced asthma, I need to keep an eye on how fast he's breathing. Of course when he's sick only mama will do, I was holding ds2 when ds1 woke up and started screaming for me, and so I handed ds2 off to my mom and went to hold ds1, and then ds2 woke up hungry and screaming, so I had to leave ds1. Oh and have I mentioned that we're moving in with my mom for a month until we find a place closer to my dh's new job? So we're basically staying in one of the bedrooms, and to avoid having the kids in the same room, I'm sleeping with my mom and ds2, while dh is with ds1. I know I'm lucky that my mom is here...just worried about ds2 and ds1 and tomorrow, dh has to go visit his job for some tests and my mom has an MRI, and I'm going to be alone with 2 kids and trying to keep them apart. I really hope ds2 doesn't get sick, but I had pneumonia when I was a month and a half and almost died, and I was ebf as a baby, so I'm still worried about him getting sick from ds1.
