Preferring to chew on metal?!

Sooo, I was thinking this is perfectly normal, and then mentioned it to my mom (5 kids) and my sister (1.5 kids- #2 is just a week old) and they thought it was really weird.

Vivi is obsessed with chewing on metal. She's teething hard- both top-center and bottom-outside toothers, and has a definite preference for hard and/or techie objects (I think bc she's allowed to have practically anything that isn't electronic, so they've become the forbidden fruit) but she REALLY likes chewing on metal.

I mean, like, a LOT. To the point where she likes to crawl into the kitchen, lean her face down and chew on the metal AC vent. I started throwing her a hooded sweatshirt with a zipper for her lunatic needs, thinking that if it hurts, she won't do it.

Should I be more proactive in discouraging this? Her diet is fine- breastmilk primarily and a wide range of solids. I'm pretty happy to let her do whatever she feels like doing (obviously to an extent) but is this really bad and/or weird?

Thanks!

While I wouldn't say it's 'normal', I also don't think that it's hurting anything. She probably just likes the way that it feels in her mouth. Babies experiment with all sorts of things and metal certainly has it's own feel.

My DS loves metal too! It freaks me out because he already has 5 teeth, and I dont want anything to harm them, but DH says let it be, and gives him metal things.

We did get him some 'keys' to chew, http://justb-byou.com/toys/lively/funkeys/ the key part is metal, and it IS plastic, but its pthalate/bpa free at least. Target sells this brand.

Also metal feels cool, especially the AC vent. Maybe that feels good to her? That's what I tell myself when DS goes after the dog bowl.

DD loves metal too. We always have a spoon in the fridge to give her at the diner table. She has an old metal rattle passed down from a friend that she loves too. I never thought much about it other than it was probably cold. Maybe it tastes different too...?

she wants something cold! teething is weird. Do you have something you can put in the freezer? Sometime my lo likes ice cubes, with a bit of water over them to make them a little juicy and not dry, in a mesh feeder.

your girl is perfect not weird
