New Pockets not working

I received 24 Rocky Mountain pocket one size diapers this summer and tried to prep them before baby got here. To do that I followed the directions on the website by washing them 3 times in warm water. After that I put them aside til she arrived. Well, she's now almost 4 weeks old and her cord has fallen off so we began trying to use the diapers! Our first attempt ended with poop coming out the legs. I believe our problem then was that the smallest setting was too small for our now 9 lb (chunky) baby and so I had a hard time getting it to snap correctly and fit right. So Saturday morning I adjusted a diaper to the next setting and tried again. This time it fit much better but the pee rolled right off and got all over my father in law! So I figured I didn't prep them correctly. Saturday and Sunday was spent rewashing in warm water. The first time I prepped I didn't dry between washes so I decided I'd try that this time. The first time I washed with detergent in warm water, dried on hot. Then I washed without detergent in warm water and dried on hot. Then I washed on hot (just for good measure I figured) and dried on hot. However, they just came out of their last dry and I tried to put water in it to see if it would absorb. The water still beaded on top of the suede cloth. Also the baby test held her poop but the pee still rolled right out and all over me. What am I doing wrong? I love the fit and feel of these diapers but am getting frustrated! What do I need to do?

Oh yeah, I am using a free and clear detergent (Costco's Kirkland's Free and Clear) and no fabric softeners or fabric sheets. We haven't used fabric sheets in about 2 months in attempt to get the build up out of the dryer before using the diapers as I know build up can be a problem.

Please help me get these diapers working!

If it were me I would take one diaper and put some dish soap on and scrub a little. When you rinse you can hold the suede cloth away from the pul and the water should run right through. If that doesn't happen I would contact the company. I had a diaper one time that the inner material was accidentally water proof and they replaced. There really isn't much prep with suede cloth IME

It sounds like it is your detergent. The free & clear can still have enzymes, optical brighteners etc. that are bad for cd.

Ok I'm going to try scrubbing one with dawn to see if that works. If so then I obviously need different detergent. Do I need to run a load with dawn before switching detergents or will running a load with new detergent be enough? If I need a dawn load, how much dawn and do you also add in detergent?

Thanks!

I honestly would be surprised if it was your detergent already. But if the dawn works that would tell me it is the detergent. Depending on if you have a front loader I'd use 2 t or top loader washer I'd use 2 T of the dawn. You don't have to strip in between in my experience but you could for good measure. I would also wash and rinse in hot water as it gets soap build up out better and will do fine with your dipes. Let us know what you find out after you scrub the diaper with dawn.

Well, the brushed-dawn diaper sorta worked. It worked until it got more dry, and then as it got drier the water started to bead on top again. I have the rest of the diapers in the wash right now with dawn but am not hopeful now that they'll work! I've tried contacting the company multiple times and am not getting any response.

Any other ideas?

Well hopefully they are just closed for the holiday weekend. But what do you mean they worked till they got more dirty and then not so much? What did they get dirty with? Sorry if that is a dumb question lol.

Until they got more dry. I did finally get the company that said they'll always bead until there's a bum in it to push it through. So we put our newly dawned diaper on baby and she peed all over me again. My last attempt this morning will be to make them smaller in hopes that it'll be tighter on babys bum and still hold her poop!

Oh, sorry I read that wrong. I don't have that brand of diaper but I have the bum genius and they have the micro suede and they don't need a baby bum in them. I think there is something wrong with your diapers. I have a "test" that may tell you. I had to use it on mirco fleece not the suede but...

Soak the micro suede with jet dry. let set and rinse. If water goes right through it once dry (since that is when your don't work the most) there is something wrong with the micre suede and I would ask for a refund personally. You can send them through the washer and try them on the baby if you perfer. When I did it my diaper worked fine for several washes and then became water repelent again.

All very strange but stuff does happen. With the diaper I had problems with the maker had used the wrong kind of micro fleece and it didn't let water through so it was replaced.

Wish you luck and let me know what happens.

So a diaper worked on the smallest setting that held it pretty tight to baby's bum. However, it turned her cute little feet blue! So I am not ok with having the diaper on that tight to make it work. Until her body proportions better, we're going to use the pockets as covers with prefolds. At least, I hope so. We are trying that out now and so far no accidents! I'm sure she's just waiting to nurse so she can pee on momma and not great grandma..
