Moving to Queens, need lots of help!

Hi Everyone!

I am moving to Forest Hills in a few weeks and I will just be entering my 3rd trimester when we are moving. I am so sad, not because I don't want to move there but because I am unexpectedly moving from NJ where I loved my midwife practice and had found a great hospital that was supportive of water births.

Are there any hospitals in Queens or nearby that are supportive of waterbirths and have either a tub or you can rent one? Which hospitals are known for being more natural birth friendly?

Are there any midwives or midwife practices that anyone can personally recommend?

My midwife recommended Janet Titmus in Forest Hills, and she delivers at North Shore. Has anyone had any experience with her?

And finally, does anyone know of a Queens pediatrician who is supportive of breastfeeding and isn't quick to prescribe for every little ailment? I tried to googled holistic pediatricians in Queens and had no luck.

Thank you all so much! I am so excited to be moving to New York, but overwhelmed by the decisions I have to make!

Hey, I just read your post. I'll try to answer what i can. (I'm typing one handed on a laptop as 4 month old Fintan nurses to sleep.) Welcome to Queens! I live in Maspeth.

I'm not sure about hospitals. I ended up waterbirthing at home. You can rent a tub from http://www.greenspancenter.com/ Ben Watts, $250 rental for the month or so before your due date.

I find living in Queens to be very isolating as far as trying to find like-minded moms. I don't have a car and where I live there are no subways, only buses.
I'm so excited to hear of another mama in the neighborhood!
I go back to work next week, but let me know how things are going and what else you might need!

As far as a pediatrician is concerned, I'm currently using Tribeca Pediatrics in Williamsburg, but I'm not thrilled with them. They are ok with no vax/delayed vax, but their staff is flakey AND they support CIO *shudder*. They also suggested that I start him on solids soon. So, I may switch to a holistic provider in Brooklyn.

YAY! I logged on today feeling kind of isolated, and looking for "tribe members" -- glad to hear someone is moving nearish to here!

Lots of moms in FH and I there's a good pediatrician in that neighborhood, Dr. Marino. But you will get all kinds of great recs on that list.

We're in Forest Hills - so welcome!

So I'm looking for a midwife right now for my next pregnancy and I'm probably leaning toward a homebirth because I'm just not thrilled with any hospital options. There is a birthing center at St Lukes / Roosevelt but I'd be careful about it because SO many people get risked out for all kinds of reasons. The Brooklyn Birthing Center is a great option, but from Forest Hills it's pretty far and I think most of the prenatal visits are there so that's not a great option if you don't have a car. I think Long Island College Hospital in Brooklyn and maybe NY Downtown may have a few tubs, but to my knowledge no hospitals in NYC allow water births. I am currently looking at midwives in Brooklyn who do both home and hospital births mostly, and hoping something will work out when I get pregnant.

For pediatricians, I have one in Queens but not Forest Hills, but I know there are one or two who would fit your criteria. If you join the LLL group listed by a previous poster you can search for threads, I know there were one or two in the past six months or so.

Feel free to pm me now or in the future with any other questions. Glad to have some more like-minded people in the area!

A friend of mine lives in Sunnyside (I'm not in NY, so I have no idea where that is in relation to anything!), and she just found out that she's pregnant with her first baby. She also just found out that her OB no longer takes her insurance! I don't think she's planning anything like a water birth, but I know she needs OB and midwifery recommendations. And I guess she'll need pediatrician recs eventually! She has no mommy friends up there, so I might send her over here

tell her to sign up for the "sunnymoms" yahoogroup. it's a great resource in addition to the LLL yahoogroup i linked above.

Janet is awesome. She was a homebirth midwife on LI until a few yrs ago, so that is a clue as to her support of natural birth. I did not birth with her, but I have met her personally and have friends that had homebirths with her. Janet can probably suggest a good ped.

I'm in Forest Hills as well!! Welcome to the neighborhood!
Vincents
I had planned a homebirth with Kristen Leonard, but alas, after 3 days of laboring at home we ended up transferring to Saint Vincent's and wit a C-Section for failure to progress.

Kristen Leonard is WONDERFUL. I love her and would think of no one other than her to deliver any future babies. With the closure of Saint Vincent's I know she now has privileges at Wycoff Hospital in Brooklyn.

As far as a pediatrician is concerned, we take the baby to Sapna Chaudary on 28th & 5th Ave in the City. She's great (& just on leave as she had her first baby). Our LO is 10 months & yet to receive his first vax.

Message me with further questions.

Best of luck!

I'm not sure if this will be helpful since you posted in August- but just saw this and thought I'd recommend Valerie Mokides- she's in New Hyde Park which is not far from you if you have a car and is probably what you're looking for in terms of holistic practices!
