Sore nipples after 24 months of nursing

Okay...so I'm still nursing my 24 month old daughter. She is and always has been a very frequent nurser, so I have yet to start my first PPAF. Since it's been this long, I'm always expecting it to be right around the corner. Well, about three days ago my nipples started being very sensitive and somewhat painful...now they are very sore (just rubbing the inside of my bra hurts them), it hurts when dd latches on and during first let down, then seems to subside a bit. I was wondering if this could mean AF is coming??? I also thought maybe thrush. I've never had thrush before, so I'm not sure exactly what it would feel like. My nipples look completely normal. Is it very common for a mother nursing a toddler, with no previous episodes of thrush, to just all of the sudden get it?
Thanks mamas, I really appreciate your input! It's been so long since I've had a cycle, I just feel like I have no idea what's going on inside my body.

My nipples always get sore when I'm ovulating. I bet that's what it is.

Any chance you are pregnant? The kind of pain you are describing was my first symptom (even before I missed my period) that I was pregnant. I have heard women describe this sort of pain associated with ovulation too, but I never experienced that.

Well...pregnancy could be a possibility. We're not preventing, but it just seems like slim chances, since I haven't been fertile for 2 years. A pregnancy would really be a nice surprise, though! :-) Ovulation would be nice too...any sign of my fertility returning would be welcomed, since we're wanting to expand our family.

same boat here...i just had my first PPAF 3 weeks ago, right after DD turned 22 months. i think i may have just ovulated, and my nipples are as sore as i can remember them being (after DD's 8 week mark, that is.) ugh. and does anyone have any experience w/toddlers nursing like nuts during ovulation? because lately it's been like 20-25x/day (and through the night.)

Yep, my nipples were sore around ovulation and menstruation (had two periods before conceiving my daughter - baby #2)...so my son was 13 months when my period returned and continued to nurse through my second pregnancy. At first I was convinced it was thrush...but it was just hormones. I don't think it's uncommon for your supply to dip around ovulation/menstruation...and of course during pregnancy. Your little one will likely nurse more in effort to get more milk...

Yep, my money is on ovulating or pregnant. Women sometimes ovulate well before their first PPAF.

My first thrush experience I dismissed initially because my breasts looked normal. Finally after the pain didn't subside I LIFTED my giant, saggy bfing breasts and saw the tell tale signs on the underneath. Just might want to take a peek, but I hope you are preggers that would be great news!
