Homemade Go-Gurt!

When I asked my 5-year old, weeks in advance, what she'd like me to pack her for her first day in kindergarten, she said, "Go-gurt!" Hmm. I explained that the yogurt they use in Go-gurt is not so great, but that I'd try to figure out a way to make a homemade Go-Gurt. I am sharing what I finally figured out because it is working great. I was ridiculously excited when I figured this out.

I picked up 2 of these 4 oz plastic squeeze bottles from the candy-making section at A. C. Moore (our local chain art supply):

They are made of #4 LDPE (low-density polyethylene), which is a safer plastic (BPA-wise). The shape is kind of cute, and you can draw on the bottle with colorful Sharpies.

After washing, I filled it up with our homemade yogurt and a smidge of maple syrup. The spout top does not have a little cap on top (though similar bottles made by Wilton do, I think) so I put a small square of plastic wrap over the mouth of the bottle before replacing the screw-on lid. This kept it from leaking (and it's still much less wasteful than actual Go-Gurt).

I practiced unscrewing and replacing the lid with my kid. Showed her how to turn it upside down for better squirting action. She thinks the whole thing is awesome and Mom is a genius.

I hope this helps someone else with a Go-Gurt obsessed kid!

Cool idea! Says the totally uncreative mom who just buys Stonyfield Farms yogurt tubes. LOL

I've never heard of Go-Gurt, but I have a bit of an idea now. I'll have to Google.

Stoneyfield yogurt tubes?! You guys get all the good stuff down there, lol. I also heard you have individual organic cheese sticks.

Edit: I looked it up and in Canada it's called Yoplait Tubes. How unoriginal, lol.

Me too! My DS LOVES 'squeezy yogurt'. Maybe I'll try out this idea, thanks!

New and improved . . .

So another poster just hipped me to GoToobs, which look perfect for this Go-Gurt thing. I can't believe I didn't run across them myself. Of course these are about 10x as expensive as my humble little art supply store find, but more reliably BPA-free, I suppose. Actually, it's a good thing I didn't find these 2 weeks ago--saved myself some money.

I've been wondering how to use these ice trays for water bottles to make yogurt tubes.

Would wrapping plastic wrap around the frozen yogurt work? I'm wondering if this might be a good way to get my toddler to eat some veggies in disguise - avocado & blueberries blended in the yogurt, or something. Any ideas?

This might be a little off topic, but we only eat yogurt tubes (the Stonyfield organic kind) frozen, as a treat. But I've been wondering how to make them a little healthier.

I personally think it would be very, very messy and not a way to make friend's with the staff at school supervising lunch
