Which room would you paint first?

So I'm about to start painting again. Joy.

I have a huge party on November 20 so I must be done with whatever I start by then. Because of this, the main floor is more important than the upstairs.

I also have a medium party next Saturday but they are super close friends, dinner (weather permitting) will be outside so I'm not concerned with a little mess but I can't have dropclothes and such all over.

I need to paint:

1. Kitchen. This is going to be a royal PITA. Not doing the ceiling but doing all the trim, windows and walls. That's 11 windows and 1 door. My kitchen is huge.

2. Kitchen bathroom. Small but doing the ceiling, trim, windows and stripes on the walls.

3. Foyer bathroom. Mega PITA. I'm painting the vanity, trim, ceiling and walls. Never painted cabinets before so this should be interesting.

*both of these bathrooms will have the same color ceiling.

Those are probably the priority.

4. Guest suite. This is the bedroom (ceiling, stripes on the walls), closet, bathroom. All ceilings, trim, windows and I have to paint a part of the shutters that were retrofitted for those windows. It is going to take a while and I have to move all the furniture into the hallway for the duration.

Where would you start? I'm contemplating starting trim/windows this weekend.

Also, I am the worlds slowest painter. Really. Slow. I think the last two rooms took me almost 3 weeks each.

kitchen. It's a PIA but you're in there every day, several times a day. I also hate hate hate it. But I would do 1 window at a time (and I keep my paintbrush in a plastic baggie, sometimes in the freezer, mid project or I have several. I paint with one, keep it in the baggie until I'm ready to clean. Take a break, pull out a new one).

11 windows, holy crap.

first step, change your mind. you keep asserting it's a PITA, and this means you don't want to do it. and, that means that it will slow up your progress even more (even if you are a slow painter). so, change your mind. This is something that you want to do, you are excited to do it, and it will make your home that much more awesome! whatever you need to get into the right attitude and frame of mind, get there. this will make the job so much more pleasant and easier to do.

once you are psyched abut the project, where to start will inspire you. you'll be excited to get rolling, and then the project will be a natural extension of that.

personally, i'm psyched to get rolling on my kitchen projects, so i would start there too.

But...I've painted before. It IS a huge PITA. I don't see myself as a pessimist, more of a realist.

I love the planning, I love the results, I lose myself in the process but I HATE starting. Hate it. Sorry but that ain't gonna change any time soon.

DH said to start with the kitchen too, just to get it over with. *sigh* I don't wanna start with the kitchen. I figured the bathroom would give me instant gratification. But the bathroom involves painting the ceiling.

Now can I have some cheese with my whine?

Will anyone be using the guest area for either party?

I would also start in the kitchen, it sounds like the most daunting task due to all the trim. Once you get that finished you'll feel like the other painting won't be as difficult. Plus everyone always ends up in the kitchen. They'll use the bathrooms but they won't be hanging out in there long.

Most likely - at least one couple usually ends up spending the night. I'm guessing I might have a house full. Last year this party turned into an all weekend kind of thing.

No matter where I start, I will not rip up anything until after next weekend. Just start the trim.

I would start with the ceilings that you are painting that will be the same color. The prep work on ceilings is a lot less than other paint jobs, especially if you are then painting the walls. You don't have to mask off the walls; just remove or tape off any ceiling fixtures and drape drop cloths or sheets over items.

We painted every ceiling in our house, except the two-story foyer ceiling (hired that out due to equipment needed and lack of health insurance on me at the time), and I have painted the living room ceiling at least three times now along with rebuilding the edge of it where it opens into the foyer. I can share a few tips, if you are interested, but the most important thing is to use the right roller covers for the texture.

After the ceilings, then I would do the walls of one room at a time. I'd start with whichever room is the worst off or would make you feel the best when it is finished.

Lastly, I would do trim and cabinets.

attitude is change-able, if you want to change it.

I am not sure if you consider the royal or the mega to be worse, lol..

I think I would go with either the biggest one first to get it out of the way, or the smallest one just to get started without feeling too overwhelmed?

Good luck!

I would do the kitchen. That's the room I spend most time in so would give me the most bang for my buck. I may be projecting though since I hate my kitchen

Unless you recently did it I would defiantly do the ceiling, I think it makes so much difference. We usually do ceilings, walls then woodwork.

If you can't start right away spend the time making easy meals for the freezer, I find it so tempting to go out when we are decorating.

Another vote for kitchen. It's a highly visible room, vitally important to the house. In the case it might be best to get the biggest job out of the way first.

Definitely the kitchen... get it over and done with!
