Craving alcohol?

Not sure what's going on, but lately I have been craving alchohol. Not beer, but champagne, white wine, gin & tonics. I seriously fantasize about a nice drink and start salivating.

Before becoming pregnant I would drink about 3-4 drinks a week. Finally broke down last night and enjoyed some pureed plums (2/3) with hard cider (1/3) in a champagne flute. It was delicious.

Why on earth would a pregnant woman crave such things?

The bubbly maybe? I know sometimes I crave soda just for the fizz in my mouth!

Maybe try some clear soda and juice? I like Sprite (or 7Up) and grape juice personally. 3-1 juice to soda ratio with a few cubes of ice.

Great...now I want one

Is there someone you can con into buying a single serve of wine or something (like, a 4 pack of little bottles) and steal a sip or two?

Part of the temptation is probably the store of delicious hard apple cider in our cellar. Last year we made gallons and gallons from our organic apple trees and used Champagne Yeast to brew it. It is effervescent and dry and the apple taste is out of this world.

And it's just sitting there on the shelves ready to be cracked open...

I craved alcohol like crazy this last pregnancy...although for me it was beer (and I'm not a beer drinker). My midwife thought it was the brewers yeast and maybe I was lacking in B vitamins. Brewers yeast is really high in B vitamins.

How far along are you?

Early in my first trimester I thought I craved it too (made up for it with sparkling white grape juice, tastes awfully close to a good white wine!) but I never did figure out what it was that I was really craving!

By the end of my second tri, when I feel okay to drink moderate amounts of alcohol, I had a few sips of good champagne at my wedding and it was horrible! I just wanted more sparkling grape juice! LOL

I'd loooooove a beer right now.

Carbs, at least that is what my midwife thought. But I used to drink more than you before my first. Carbs and habit.

I agree with Mae's idea. There are so many kinds of sparkly juices and they are YUMMY! Try a glass next time the craving hits... if you want. Some women drink moderately throughout their pregnancies. TETO

I craved beer in my first tri, and I hate beer. Hops and the b vit in the yeast help with morning sickness...and I was pretty sick.
Now I've moved on to craving wine, which is ok with me as I have a history of ptl and my mw recommends the wine to stop ctx.

I craved wine coolers...

I always crave beer while I'm pregnant. It's the flavor, not the alcohol so much, but still...bizarre craving. I don't give in, though. For me, alcohol and pregnancy don't mix.

There's non-alcoholic beer. Well, the alcohol level is crazy low at least.

depending what you are craving, there are all kinds of fantastic dealcoholized and even alcohol free wines, beers, ciders and most are available at any grocery store.

I steal some of my dh's beer at dinner sometimes. I miss beer...

Becks non-alchoholic is a good beer... especially ice cold and poolside in the summer...

My other favourite while pregnant was Sangria made with non-alcoholic wine. I could never drink that wine by itself but the juice and fresh fruits it was really tasty!

i haven't drank in years (one night of cocktails in the past 6+ years), but as soon as i got pg this time, i was craving beer. the only solution i could think of is having my husband order a beer, and i let the foam touch my lips, lick it off, and realize how vile it is (obviously, i had him order a beer i didn't like).

"Thus, from a strictly scientific viewpoint, one cannot say that one drink a day during pregnancy is dangerous to the baby."

I had a glass of wine a few weeks ago and plan to have one or two more by the end of my pregnancy. My veiw, if you truly feel your bringing no harm to your baby and you make informed choices, RELAX. I allow myself sushi about once a month too. Only from nice places that i know are fresh and farmed (not wild).

I didnt look to hard for the link but i think its like 2 oz a day of "liquor" is safe. I really dont think you'll harm your baby with a glass of something suiting to you. Ive read in a few breastfeeding books too that a drink is good to help let your milk down.

I agree, people need to relax !

Sushi is my pet peeve... There is really no harm in eating Sushi while pregnant... I ate it at least once a week... and not the veggie or cooked fish (yuck) ones either...
Deep freezing kills as much as cooking when it comes to fish, so frozen fish is technically "safer" than fresh... as long as you are making it or buying from a place you trust, Sushi is harmless... like soft cheeses (most are pasteurized anyway so there is no danger yet people freak out)...

Again people really just need to relax...

I did share some of my favourite non-alcoholic choices before that I could drink whenever and as much as I wanted, but even my MW with my first two said that a glass of wine once in a while was not a problem.. I had a few small glasses each pregnancy with no guilt whatsoever...

I'm a confirmed red wine lover, and had a glass with dinner 5+ nights a week before becoming pregnant. With my first, I researched and discussed at length with my midwife, and we decided that once in while, after the 1st tri, a glass with dinner was fine. I think I stuck to no more often than once every 2 weeks.

I agree with PP that people need to relax. My realization during my last pregnancy was that we (in the US) live in a culture that endorses people blaming others for their problems (e.g. suing McD's for serving hot coffee) and therefore are 1. a very litigious society and 2. aren't to be trusted as individuals for making our own decisions. It's safer to say "no drink during pregnancy" because, in the US, if a doc tells the wrong person that "once in a while is okay" they might very well go out, have 10 drinks a day, and sue the doc when their baby is born FAS for telling them drinking was okay. And somewhere, a jury or judge is going to sympathize with that idiot.

So I made a conscious decision to follow guidelines from France, UK, and other countries. All their warnings stated no more than 1 drink a week, with water and food, over the course of a few hours. The warnings frequently coincided with avoiding second-hand smoke, since pregnant women having a Guinness in a pub might be exposed to smoke. Which I thought was interesting, having that warning adjacent to the alcohol guidelines.

So, OP, if you are craving a G&T, I think you are okay. Just drink only ONE, WITH dinner, over the course of a few hours, with a glass of WATER. When I had a glass of wine, I would sip slowly, and if ever my tummy started to have that burn-y feeling, I would back off and have some water, and sip in another 10 mins or so. and PS, my kid is fine. The most verbal 3 year old at his preschool.
