Cough/cold remedies?

I actually thought I might have this cold under control, but it's going to my chest now :-(

I'm drinking tea with honey and lemon and water with lemon.

I still haven't reached bowel tolerance, but I'm up to taking 3000mg of vit C 3x/day - will increase again today. I'm taking 800iu of vit D 3x/day. And I'm downing a clove of garlic 3x/day.

Any remedies? I will probably end up taking a cough suppressant for a night or two just so I can sleep. Right now I am not coughing if I'm upright - and there's not enough of the night left for me to want to take the cough suppressant.

i don't think there are any cough syrups that are approved for pregnancy. according to my drug book (admittedly, a few years old) the pregnancy category for dextromethorphan is "unknown". in other words, may not be worth the risk.

it sounds odd but if you can get tylenol #1 (8mg codeine) that can settle your cough reflex. not sure if you can get it where you are - in canada you can ask the pharmacist and not have a prescription. codeine is fine for pregnancy, but obviously you want to take as little as necessary.

i don't have any other non-drug remedies but i'm sure the other moms here will have great ideas! hope this helps.

Official word from the pharmacist I saw last time I had a cold (around 32 weeks) was that I was far enough along for dextromethorphan to be safe.

There's also this study.

I only took DM to get some sleep. I think it was one or maybe two doses over the course of two days.

I'd have to get a prescription for codeine.

I just had a nasty cough about a month ago that wouldn't go away and my midwife gave me the homeopathic remedy Pulsatilla. I took 3 tablets of 200cc Pulsatilla 3x a day for 3 days and I was better in no time. You could research that and see if it matches the description of your cough.

Also, the chinese herbal remedy yin chao is safe for pregnancy and great for immune boosting ( http://www.holisticchineseherbs.com/...inchaojin.html - this is not the brand I use, but thought you might want to look at the ingredients) but usually works best at the FIRST sign of sickness so maybe next time around. You take 4 tablets every four hours for a total of 4 doses. Works for me EVERY time.

Have you tried cough drops or vitamin c drops? Usually helps my coughs to suck on something.

We had swine flu last summer. It was horrible and my husband ended up with double pneumonia. The antibiotics didnt touch the cough and we found this one a trip to San Francisco http://www.gaiaherbs.com/product.php?id=327

6 weeks of a cough was gone in 3 days. We have used it a couple times since then for our daughter and for me and it has kicked the cough quickly.
