Using a plain old trash can as a diaper pail?

I'm having a hard time finding a local source for a diaper pail that isn't specifically for disposable diapers (I don't really want to encase my dipes in plastic) and is big enough. So I was thinking, is there any reason I can't just use a regular trash can with a lid like this one for a diaper pail?

We found that DD's diapers were not smelly at all if they were allowed to breathe, but got really gross if they weren't, even for a few hours. So what I'd really recommend is a nice, open laundry basket, and perhaps keeping it in the laundry room.

If you want to go with something more closed up, and you're going to do laundry often, I think that might be okay. You'll probably still want to line it with a plastic garbage bag and change it regularly, though, or I think it'll end up pretty smelly.

I've never had trouble with a closed pail before, and with twins I will probably need to do diaper laundry fairly often. I do have two diaper pail liners. I will need to check and see if they would fit a larger trash can.

That's basically what I used, except without the lid. I did use a pail liner because I didn't want to be washing the trash can out all the time. Worked a treat!

We use a plain, uncovered kitchen trash can.

We're planning on using a tall trash bin with a swinging lid.

I cant find a decent photo of one. But we figure that a can like this can hide the sight of the diapers while still allowing some airflow to them.

Yay! Swinging lid is a great idea. With 4 big kids and 2 twins (eventually) running around, I'm not willing to go lidless. The oldest two have enough sense not to touch dirty diapers but I don't trust the other two.

we used a clear plastic, lidded, oscar the grouch style trash can with a liner and it worked great. It had locking things on the side for the days it smelled rough, but for the most part we just tossed the lid on or left it to the side for some airing out.

I used a pail liner ( I think it was this one) with just a plain old garbage can w/a lid and foot pedal. Worked fine. No smells.

We use a swinging lid can that we bought at Target. Mhighly recommend a washable
Liner for the pail.

We use a slim plastic kitchen garbage can with a step-to-open lid.

With these liners:

We've not had any real odor issues, but we wash at LEAST every other day. These liners also have a little cloth sachet that you can add essential oils to, so smells can be masked even further. We only put oil on them every few washes.

Same here. Its been going strong (without smelling too strong) for 14 months now. I have a few pail liners that I use with it. I think its the perfect system.

FYI: We don't use a liner with our pail, never have. Every so often I fill it with a bit of hot water from the sink in the laundry room and wash my hands over it. Then I close the lid and let it steam and soak for a bit.

i would go with stainless steel b/c the plastic will absorb the smell. we got one at target for like $40 and i just "line" it with the laundry bad and put the cloth diapers in it. http://www.target.com/Round-Step-Tra...i_detailbutton it doesnt seem to have good reviews but it has worked fine for our dipes lol

yeah, we used a taget kitchen trash can pretty much like that.

No liner so I had to hose it off outside sometimes. I definitely recomend getting a washable wetbag liner sort of thing and tossing it in the diaper wash sometimes, over my hand-wash-the-pail method. (like BG pail liner)

Hmm, I just have a dry bucket with a handle. Will it be a problem when she is eating more solids (smell)?

We use a tall laundry hamper from Target. Of course I can't find it on their website right now, but it is the white rubbermaid type. But it also has an oval shaped hole in the lid (I assume to keep smells from being trapped), which is perfect. Heck, with some diapers I don't even need to open it. I just stuff them in through the hole.

I have a diaper pail liner in it, and it's a tight fit but it works.

We use a stainless looking step can (similar to this) and use a fabric liner - well we rotate between two. Works great and this way our dog can't access them. We found an Arm & Hammer baking soda disk on a suction cup that sticks to the lid so we don't have to worry about odors (and we wash every day).
