How do I learn how to cut my 15 mo old son's hair?

Can't take him to a hair cutting place because he would be traumatized by the stranger, as he still has a bad case of stranger anxiety.

I don't want a crew cut on him, so not sure if clippers would work.

Currently, we do a side part with his bangs side swept to one side on him, but they are a bit too long now. I don't know how to "feather" them to get them to look right. His hair is fairly thin too.

Also, I need to trim up the back, but am afraid of having tiers of horizontal cuts in the back. Because he was on his back for a longer time, he has a shorter area of hair on the back of his head that isn't the same length as the rest of it that has grown in since birth.

Anyone know of any books or videos (maybe on the internet) that would give directions?

I don't know of any books or videos but I would just look for pictures of what you might want online and try to get there little bit by bit. Maybe you can find some youtube videos?

can you just snip little bits at a time so you can see how it looks as you go? just trim the too long/problem areas? and then let it go naturally..

I stick mine in his high chair with some snacks or, if the hair really needs to be cut, an episode of "Signing Time!". While he's occupied, I dampen his hair with a spray bottle (which he seems to enjoy), comb it out, and then snip off little long pieces here and there with those cheap rounded safety scissors you buy for five-year-olds. Sometimes if I don't feel like dealing with the spray bottle, I just get him after a bath when his hair is completely damp.

The safety scissors are key, since he likes to jerk his head around unexpectedly to see what I'm doing.

He has really curly hair, so it's very forgiving even if I don't do the best job. But generally it looks pretty good when I'm done. I'm just careful never to take off too much in one snip, and I comb it out carefully each time I'm about to cut to make sure I'm not leaving any little long rat tails or mulletty pieces in back.

It gets easier with practice.

I sit ds on the counter after his bath (lots of things he likes to touch that he normally can't reach) & make a couple quick snips - pretty much just around the edges. It often takes a couple sessions to get everything cut just right.

For feathering, you start by cutting that portion to one length. Then you lift all but a thin layer of the hair and cut that a bit shorter. Then you lift all but a little more and cut that a bit shorter. Repeat.

thining shears!

They are your answer. I bought some at the beauty supply shop and have given way better hair cuts since. To the point where I was asked and cut my friend's dd and my friend's hair and my housemate's hair!

I second the video idea, but my SIL who is a stylist showed me how to take a section of hair, twirl it, them sort of snip snip snip into it to layer it... you just sort of take the twirled section and peck at it with the scissors and it naturally layers it, then once that is done, we go back and tidy up the edges... hard to explain, but I hope that makes sense!
