ds is currently on 2 different antibiotics due to an infection in his leg. we will be stopping one of them once the wound culture comes back and we know which bacteria we are dealing with. i am concerned about him having some GI issues due to all the drugs and plan to try to get lots of yogurt into him, etc. my question - how much does he need? it is worthwhile getting a supplement? i also read that tempeh is also a good source of probiotics, but i am wondering if cooking the tempeh kills them. any advice is helpful. thanks

jarrow brand makes a great loose blend that you can mix right into the yogurt or other soft food or put in milk, etc... you can find it in the fridge section of most health food stores.

hope your little one is on mend soon!

Yes cooking tempeh or yogurt or any food kills off beneficial bacteria, they die over 120 deg.

Yogurt doesn't really contain all that much (unless you make yourself and culture for 24hrs) plus the strains are not native to the human digestive system, they are transient bacteria (stop taking it and the benefits stop).

Since you are dealing with sounds like a broad spectrum antibx I would definately get a supplement with higher good bacteria counts. You want to fight fire with fire. You can take the beneficial yeast saccharomyces boulardii during and with antibiotics. Then do a month or two of intensive lactobacillus/bifidobacteria to reinoculate his good bacteria that has been wiped out by the antibx. after they are done.

I would use topical iodine on skin infections, applied several times per day. Regardless of what bacteria it is iodine will kill it off.
