Personal Injury Insurance for Military Members?

Does anyone know about this? Personal Injury Insurance without any war/terrorism clauses? We have some (automatic) but it's not much compared to what we'd need if he were truly injured. Basically, if he's injured, we're in just as deep as poop financially than if he were to pass. Even worse off, actually, considering how the VA processes benefits. We want to buy injury insurance as well but I'm not finding any.

Is that because they just aren't that stupid?

We have an extra life insurance policy we got on dh (he's a Marine) when we got pregnant with ds1. It's through USAA and I think it includes about $50,000 (I think!) in disability insurance or something like that.

I figure, if dh gets injured we have that and dh will be medically retired so he will get some money from the military for that every month forever. Plus I think he may be eligible for unemployment (a close friend's husband actually just went through what we're talking about. And he got medical retirement and then unemployment until he got another job.).

It's not a lot, and we'd certainly be no where near as comfortable as we are now. But it's enough to help us keep on our feet while we figure things out. I'm going back to school soon so it would probably be me changing my career goals to something that will take a short amount of time for me to start making money.

Oh! And dh is transferring his GI Bill over to me (he's making the military a career) so if he is injured and medically retired, I will be able to get the BAH while using the GI Bill (though spouses can't get the BAH if the service member is currently active duty.).

Anyway, I've never had any experience with just strait up personal injury insurance, but I would talk to USAA and see. I've never known them to have war exclusions of any type. Just remember there are other options available in the case that something awful does happen.

Thanks so much. That is immensely helpful. I'm going to talk to Army Community Service tomorrow. I didn't realize he'd get medical retirement as well plus unemployment. I will ask about that and also ask for references so I have those bills in hand when I go begging at the army. God forbid, but frankly, I want to face it head-on now so later when I'm in shock I won't have to think it through.

I thought the GI Bill was automatically transferable? Do they need to go through a procedure for that?

We have USAA but today they were off for the holiday, so I'm supposed to call tomorrow. We were planning on getting an additional policy (life) from them so we'll see what they can do. I guess with 50k from USAA, that makes 100k total including TSGLI, right?

With the GI bill the way it's transferred may depend on the branch. With Marines and Navy I know the servicemember has to commit to 10 years of active duty for the spouse to be able to use it. Now sure about the other requirements. My dh is handling all of that.

I'm interested in hearing what ACS tells you when you talk to them. I hope you keep us updated. And I think it's great you're looking into all this now. It's always better to have a plan B and not need it than to be overwhelmed should something awful happen.
