Netflix streaming only

Thread Starter
I'm TV-free, but I've been thinking of getting a membership from Netflix, but I *only* want to do streaming movies. I've got DSL (lowest speed) but I think it would work. So many movies I want to see are not available either through my library or interlibrary loan.

Can I just go month to month or do you have to sign up for a year at a time. If you're not doing DVDs by mail, are you limited with how many movies you can do a month? And how much is it for streaming only?

Thanks!

I don't think you can do streaming only. The least expensive package they have is 8.99 (thats what we have)

The minimum system reqs are pretty easy... Mac OS X 10.4.11 (but has to be intel based, I do know that)

and the Windows is probably XP SP 2 or 3

we do this here in Korea. We signed up for the one dvd a month, unlimited streaming for $8.99 a month. I do believe you're limited on how much you can watch if you don't sign up for the DVD, but honestly you don't have to put any DVDs in your queue if you don't want to...that's what we do, we don't even bother with them. I love watching old series like Lost and Nip/Tuck etc on it. I think it's totally worth it.

yeah, there's no streaming only package- yet AFAIK. When we can afford it we do netflix. We have a tv (no cable) and it has a built in dvd player so it worked for us. There are some films that aren't available to stream so it was nice to have.

When things get tight again, I just cancel.

We pay 9.99 a month for unlimited streaming and 1 disk at a time. We never order the DVD's, though. There is no limit to instant play movies. We can even stream two at the same time (laptop and PC, or TV and PC).

The only thing is the selection is smaller - but it's worth the convenience. Make sure you have a good computer and high-speed Internet, though. My FIL was just telling me he can't stream Netflix b/c it was too slow to load and would freeze up. We don't have this problem - even when multiple devices are running on the same Internet connection.

Oh, and no contract or anything. You can cancel or even put your membership on hold whenever you want.

I would guess that you could go with the lowest priced package (8.99), and just never (or almost never) make requests to have anything mailed out - there is a lot that you can watch instantly. (Not sure myself whether quality/amount of what you can get streaming varies or not with different packages. . .).

right, there's a limited plan with one dvd and 2 hours a month streaming for 4.99...I thought it was definitely worth it to upgrade to the unlimited streaming.

Like someone mentioned there is a lower (set amt time of streaming) available but really for a few bucks more you get unlimited. You can purchase as little as 1 month or a membership so I would consider buying 1 month to make sure it works with your connection and so that you can see what movies they have available that you would like.

Yup... we have on occasion streamed to three... the computer, the xbox360 and the wii...

Another Netflix streamer here! We don't have cable. We do the $8.99 plan. DP is the one who orders DVDs most of the time. The kids and I watch things streaming. I watch on the computer most of the time. The kids watch on the TV via Roku. When it gets cold and I can't run outside anymore, we will probably go up the two DVD plan so I can get workout DVDs (not too many choices with streaming fitness stuff).

Us, too! It's been such a great feature. No fights during movie time is fabulous.

we love it. we have the one disc at a time and unlimited streaming. we rarely watch the disc, but we do on occasion. we have a queue for disc with only stuff that can't be streamed

My main complaint about using the streaming is that it can be glitchy, and the picture quality is no where near blu ray. Sometimes it pauses, kicks you out of the program all together ect and I have a good broadband connection. I only use it for a suppliment as a result. Also, the program availablity is pretty limited compared to their disc offerings and are constantly changing.

I have some of the same issues. Also it sometimes slows down my internet connection really badly. I am not sure if I had a bad router or a lot of people experience that.

I love the streaming, I watched all of the Bones episodes and we watch Dr Who now and then. We also have the 8.99 package

We only have issues with the one streaming to Wii because that is in the lr and our router is in our bedroom... (it should reach just fine but its on the router and not the service)... we occasionally have issues with the xbox that is feet from the router but our interwebz service leaves a lot to be desired...

I very rarely have issues with streaming. Maybe it's a location thing?

We have the 1 DVD at at time plus unlimited streaming for $8.99 a month. We watch a couple DVDs a month, but we mostly use it for streaming. I have the slowest DSL available and it works just fine (we watch on TV through the Wii). It does cause the internet on the computer to run slower when something is steaming, but it's not a big deal to us.

We've got the $9/month plan and I love, love, love it. We don't have cable. I do get the one DVD at a time, but we use the streaming more.

Sometimes it can be a little glitchy, but that doesn't bother me. The picture quality is fine, but our only tv is a 15 year old 19 inch box, so I'm not terribly pickly in that regard.

I agree, but I am optimistic they will have more "groups" get on board.

We ditched cable and got a media computer with digital rabbit ears that runs Windows Media Center that has a DVR.

I love, no, I am IN love with Netflix streaming.....so much choice and some really, really great content for all ages.

I too find this information valuable. ESpecially since I love movies and sometimes I am not able to go to the movies all the time or even patient enough to wait for the movies to come out on cable. I may be looking into this Netflix to see what service I can get from them.
