Weird and annoying.. happened to anyone else?

So my DD is almost 11 months old, and about a week ago she started doing something really annoying when we're lying down nursing. She'll start out on her side (the normal position) and then she'll roll herself onto her stomach with her butt in the air (still nursing), then she'll push her feet into the bed and lift up so her butt comes up off the bed (still nursing). Eventually, she DOES roll herself over RIGHT UP AGAINST ME. And she keeps doing it over and over and over until the minute she falls asleep!! It's like, we can't possibly get any closer, and then she rolls herself over in my direction, so that her body is pretty much rubbing against mine as she rolls. And on hot days (which we just had a few of.. and no A/C) it's awful. I don't understand this behavior. She fusses often when she does this, and I don't know why. As far as I know, I've got enough milk letting down, and she isn't ill or constipated.. why does she do this?? Any suggestions? TIA!

Oh Mama, I feel for you! My little guy is only 4.5 months old. He doesn't do what you described. His annoying nursing while lying down habit happens when he is half asleep too. He rolls away from me onto his back (still nursing), and then rolls towards me, and the far away hand is hurled through the air with this roll, and bonks me. This also repeats until I either grab the hand (which results in squeals) or he falls asleep.

Why must they do this?

Haha, she does that, too! I get slapped in the face, neck, etc all the time by her "hurling arm!" Not only that, but when she rolls over she often knees me in the stomach or ovaries. I wish someone knew why babies do these things, and how to stop them, lol! It'd make nursing so much more pleasurable!

My dd is 13 months old and she is definitely an acrobat. She contorts herself in all sorts of directions all while continuing to nurse. The joys of beginning to nurse a toddler.

Ds tries similar antics. I always unlatch him & tell him he needs to settle if he wants to nurse. Several times of that & he usually settles. Personally I think sometimes he wants to be in a different position to be more comfortable but it's not possible to achieve that position while nursing 'cause usually as soon as he's done nursing he rolls over away from me & on his tummy.

well, i'm nursing my second LO who did/does stuff like that. i'd say get used to it, but you don't have to take it laying down (so to speak). you can set some ground rules. at 11 mo, they aren't too little to understand.

as for *why* they do this, i'd say: take it as a compliment. they are so used to nursing that they literally take it for granted (and this is a good thing -- means you have always been there for them, nursing). they take it for granted that they can twist and pull and pinch and everything else, and you will still nurse them. that is, it's their god given right to twist, pull, pinch, turn over, etc. AND nurse. all at the same time.

in short, they are rolling over, etc. BECAUSE THEY CAN.

My LC said the other day that as babies get older they'll do nurse-nastics, and it's normal! They'll be climbing up sideways, flipping themselves around, going at it upside down.

I was chuckling outright reading all of you mamas' responses to my post. I'm so glad to know that this isn't an uncommon occurence! I know I've seen videos of toddlers running around and then stopping to nurse in the weirdest positions (like hanging over the side of the couch), but I guess I always think of my DD as "so little" still that I forget she's almost a toddler herself. It definitely puts a hilarious spin on things to imagine all these little babies flipping and rolling around nursing!

my second DD does it just like her sister did. always twisting and trying to practice her standing etc while nursing. i will put her down to play until she is really ready to nurse. then she will lay down and sink right in to it. if i nurse her when she is all over the place it is like getting tittie twisters.

Mine did that. and cute at the same time.

I remember nursing Gabrielle on the couch. Somehow she flipped herself over (still attached to me) and layed over the arm of the couch. She started giggling because she was so proud of herself.

Uh, yes she continued to do this little act.
