Congestion in newborn after illness?

About 2 weeks ago, my 3 year old came down with something (fever, slight cough, runny nose) but then recovered after 2 days. My DH and my 4 week old DS came down with it the next day. Baby had a little cough (coughed like twice every 12 hrs) and had a stuffed nose- nothing else. Well, it's been almost 2 weeks and baby still gets congested at night and can not lay flat. I have his mattress elevated because even side sleeping next to me made him hysterical. IF he is still in his carseat or held upright, the congestion is gone.

I've used saline drops and breastmilk for his nose as well as an aspirator. I occasionally get something out but it seems to be very far back there. I've increased my SA intake and have been taking him out into the sun a few times a day. What else can I do?

He doesn't have a fever, still has plenty of wet and dirty diapers, and seems "normal".

As a side to this post: He had silent reflux and I started eliminating things from my diet. This helped him to the point he doesn't need any meds. That being said, could another allergy be giving him congestion at night? I'm already dairy free.

IME, newborns bet congested very easily. They have such small nasal passages and they can get stuffed up so easily. I think all my kids have had a couple weeks of nasal congestion around that age.

I would just keep doing what you're doing with the breastmilk. However, do be careful with the aspirator. I've had a doctor told us that using the nasal aspirator too much can make it worse as it can irritate and inflame the nasal passages.
