Fav. puppy training book?

Looking for a great book on training a puppy. We just adopted two puppies, one male, one female. They are a mix of a couple terrier breeds. We are working on housebreaking, would like them to sleep in their travel kennel at night without whining all night long, and basically want good puppy/dog behavior.

What is your 'go to' puppy book?

I loooooove Dr. Ian Dunbar's "Before and After You Get Your Puppy" - I think they may both be available for free download at www.dogstardaily.com . I also have a number of students with dogs of all ages who swear by Pat Miller's "The Power of Positive Dog Training" book - it even has a 6 week training plan!

Another vote for Ian Dunbar's Before and After You Get Your Puppy. It was recommended to us by our breeder and we have recommended it to others as well.

Thanks, I have downloaded the Dunbar's one. It has been really helpful. I will look up the other one too.

Dunbars is always the first I mention...it covers everything and is so convenient

Before

After

Patricia McConnell's Family Friendly Dog Training is good as well.

And I suggest all dog oweners read Bones Would Rain from the Sky by Suzanne Clothier, THe Other End of the Leash by Patricia McConnell, and Dont Shoot the Dog by Karen Pryor.

There are a ton of other I would recommend like Paul Owens, Jean Donaldson etc, but those to start

And on youtube, the user Kikopup had a ton of great videos

Definitely Cesar Millan's (the Dog Whisperer) How to Raise the Perfect Dog: Through Puppyhood and Beyond. I know many on here are against him but I am in complete disagreement with them!

Thanks for all the suggestions--I plan on looking at all of them. I think multiple perspectives can give someone a real balanced approach.

I think the most important parts about reading a book is to research WHY that particular method works. There are many different ways to approach training, and most of them work. Just know how and why they work, and the fallout that some methods can have.

Another good important genereal info book is Calming Signals. So many people dont realize a lot of normal dog behaviors that are often viewed as ignoring, being stubborn, etc are actually they dog throwing calming signals, meaning they are stressed and scared. There are a ton of youtube videos of kids and dogs, or babies and dog where you will see many of these (really sad) The dog will flick its tongue, keep looking away, etc and the owners are oblivious to all the warnings the dog is throwing out.

All of these, great suggestions!

Patricia McConnell is my fave! I train dogs as a hobby and retrain dogs for adoption, her methods can be used by anybody on any dog, and create a dog that loves to learn.
