Garage sale price points? Help me price my stuff to sell!

I'm having a garage sale on Saturday. I want to price things so that they'll move. We have a ton of stuff, and anything that doesn't sell goes to Goodwill, because it needs to be gone. At the same time, I need to make some money on this. But I'd rather sell a lot of stuff cheap than a few things not so cheap.

I'm curious as to what people would consider a 'good deal' for the following kinds of things:

Kids' clothing (infant through size 8)
Women's plus size clothing (I've gone down two sizes and am purging)
High chair
Stroller
Kettler Trike (older, used)
Mobile for crib
Preschool toys (little people and the like)
Duplos (big box)
Lego Primo (baby sized)
Kids' books
Kids' DVDs

I have some prices in mind, but I'd rather see what people say first. (I also have a ton of other stuff, but this is the main kind of thing).

I would look on Craigslist to get an idea.

Here is what I'd expect to pay at a yard sale:

Kids' clothing (infant through size 8)- $1 per piece, $3 per outfit for babies/young kids clothes. maybe slightly more for bigger sizes, name brands, jackets, etc.

Women's plus size clothing- probably about $2 per piece

High chair- $10 (which is about what you can find them for at thrift stores around here

Stroller-VERY much depends on brand and condition. For a basic Graco type stroller that was part of a travel system, I'd pay about $15 (I found an older one on Craigslist for $10 once). certainly more if it was a jogging stroller (up to $50 depending on brand, condition) or a double stroller

Kettler Trike- $5

Mobile for crib- $2

Preschool toys (little people and the like)- would batch them up and sell them in lots- like putting a zip lock bag of little people and the airplane together for $3, and price up for larger lots or bigger toys.

Duplos (big box)- $3-$5 dollars depending on size of box

Lego Primo (baby sized) -$2

Kids' books- .25-.50 cents per book

Kids' DVDs- $1-$3 depending on whether or not they are current popular characters.

Stroller VGC- $5, SD- $3 .... forgot about double or jogging because I never look at those I have no idea how much they run used or new

Preschool toys (little people and the like) very cheap.... $1 per item/bag full of toys
Duplos (big box) $3-$4
Lego Primo (baby sized) $3
Kids' books $.25-$.50
Kids' DVDs $1 for single DVDS

Kids' Items

On kijiji and Craigslist kiddie stuff seems to move quickly at about 60% of retail, subtract from that if the condition is beyond typical wear. I expect better prices at garage sales though. On kijiji or Craigslist the seller can wait for a buyer who really wants the item. Garage sales are more about moving the merchandise quickly.

Kids books have horrible resale value. I've been to lots of sales where all children's books were $0.25 each or $1.00 each. I've often scooped up books that were originally $20 for those prices. I suspect that the same goes for DVDs. At a garage sale, I'd be looking for $1 or $2 each.

I'd expect a $30 mobile or toy to be $5 or $6. Maybe $10 or $15 if it was in it's original box, looked unused, all parts were there, etc.

It's hard to say about the stroller or the high chair without knowing make and model. I've known lots of people to buy a decent highchair for $10 or $15 at a garage sale though, or a stroller for $20 or $25.

If you have a lot of little stuff to move consider putting lots together, or doing three for a dollar, or three for five dollars.

Expect that people will want to haggle. If you want $5 for something and you won't take anything less, ask $7.

I second the Craigslist suggestion for pricing. It is very region specific.

Kids clothes here are priced all over the map but I personally pay at most $.50 per piece or $1 per outfit/sleeper/sleep sack. DH about keeled over when I paid $3 for an outfit a few weeks ago but it was Hanna so I needed it.

Adult clothes I generally purchase at $1 or $2 a piece.

Strollers and highchairs around here are generally mainstream (Graco, Evenflo, etc.) and not the high end stuff. I'd price it around $10 or $15.

Books/toys are generally $.50 to $5. I tend to purchase the lower priced items unless the $5 gets me a lot of great stuff (whole set of Legos, whole set of farm animals + barn + fencing).

My suggestions are in red. I'm avid garage saler - I go to them quite often and hold one with my MIL almost every summer. This is what I would charge/or want to pay for these items. Good luck!

Also as the morning got closer to noon, I was ruthless in slashing prices, I basically took any offer that a person made.

If you don't sell the big stuff, sell it on Craigslist. So don't panic if it doesn't sell.

Other thing is put an Ad on Craigslist that you are having a sale. Put in the ad some of the big stuff you are having. If your sale is say on Saturday, post the ad on Thursday night or first thing Friday morning.

I just had a garage sale last month. Most of it was clothing and books. I placed an add on Craigslist and put signs all over the morning of the sale. We had a great turn out. This was our pricing:

Baby Clothes (NB-24m) - 25 cents for faded or dated looking items; 50 cents for shirts, shorts, pants, and onesies in good condition; 1 dollar for outfits, pjs and items in like new condition and/or name brand. I had a couple items marked higher and they did not sell. However, we sold a ton of the stuff marked $1 or less. I also gave a bulk discount for a couple who bought 20 onesies.

Adult/Juniors Clothing - The adult stuff was all name brand (banana republic, abercrombie, etc.). It was marked $1 for items starting to look a little worn to $5 for a jacket with the tags still on it. Most items were $2.

Adult Books - We didn't have kid's books, but the adult books were all marked $1. A few people asked for the paper backs for 50 cents, which I took. I'd guess kid's books would go for 25-50 cents.

This is what I have done and we have been successful.
