Can you get a exemption if your child goes to Catholic school?

Have a friend that tried to get an exemption, but because her daughter goes to Catholic school they will not accept a religious exemption. How else can she proceed?

It depends on the state, but I think here in Texas, the public schools have to accept an exemption form, and private organizations can choose to accept them or not. Is there an option for a non-religious exemption where your friend is?

  • Below is from the NJ department of health. I'm not sure it changes anything for her as it says "should" accept, not must.

If the school has funding by the government then it is my understanding they must accept the exemption. However if they are totally private with no government funding then the do not have to accept the exemption.

The "progressive" Catholic church/school 5 mins from us rejected us. They only took medical exemptions, blah blah blah. It was only preschool, but I was disappointed.

was asking similar question today, didn't see this thread when I first did my search. this is my worst nightmare. We live in CT and only have religious and medical exemptions and we want to send DS to Catholic school b/c we are Catholic and want him to attend especially since the public schools in our town are not good. one of the reasons we moved to this town is b/c they have several Catholic schools and I didn't realize at the time they probably would not accept religious exemptions.

read something promising from the thread included in this thread, so thanks. :0) How do I find out if the Catholic school I'm interested in receives federal or state funding?

Call them anonymously and ask where they get their funding from.
