Christmas gifts for babies-playsilks for an 8 month old?

I'm trying to think of Christmas presents for my nieces, one will be 8 months old and one will be one month old! Would an 8 month old like playsilks? I was thinking of maybe dying the small 6x24's, one in each color of the rainbow, and putting them in a small basket? Would a baby like that or is it not a great idea?

Any other ideas? And for the one month old as well! I'm in the UK so have to mail them to the US, so light ideas please!

That is a lovely gift for an 8 month-old. My 8 mo loves play silks.

Someone suggested (here or some other place) that you could always wrap a gift in a playsilk. Maybe that's helpful to you? Considering the ages you are talking about though I think playsilks are definitely appropriate.

my 8.5mo loves them... he also loves wooden blocks.

What about a wooden teether for the 1 MO? You can order them on Etsy - there are some amazing people on there making wooden kids items!

I think those would be appropriate for both ages.

what about a version of those Kathe Kruse dolls for babies? They are so cute

My boys are 10mo right now and I have some (undyed) silk hankies that they like. They wave them around, play peek aboo, etc. Sometimes I stuff them all into an old wipes container and let them tug them out one after another. They also love baskets and taking stuff out of them, so I'd definitely think that's a good call. Just try to get one that doesn't have sticky-outy bits that could snag the scarves - our wicker baskets tend to break down and have pointy bits.

Really, a one month old won't know the difference. When DS was born we got sooooo many stuffed animals. I appreciate the gesture but we now have this zoo of like dozens of stuffed animals and so far he only likes one of them, and I assume over the next couple years he'll only favor a few others meaning most of them will sit there on the shelf.
Soooo, I would get something useful for such a young baby, like a nice swaddling blanket (I like Swaddle Me or Aden and Anais...but there are also some gorgeous ones on Etsy, which I second as a great place to get hand-made baby stuff) or burp cloths. Or, depending on price range and if the parents need it, a Moby wrap or other carrier. But yeah, for a baby who won't care one way or the other definitely get something the parents can use. Otherwise, you could try one of those music-box animals where you pull the string and a song plays. Or a mobile or book with simple black-and-white designs, very young babies love those!
