Traveling to the 3rd world!!

Hi all,

I'm here to ask questions about vaccines and BF'ing. I'm traveling to Haiti for a legal project that I'm working on in about a month, and I really don't want to wean my son yet. He's 20mo, and nursing 3-4times a day. While I'm in Haiti he'll be with his dad (who he does not live with but has a great relationship with him).

Vaccines are generally safe for travel right? What about malaria meds? I don't necessarily HAVE to take the malaria pills - I can just slather myself in deet and wear long sleeves/long pants, but I wanted to find out. I'm going to my dr on Friday to talk to her about all this, but I wanted to see if any of you awesome women know about this?

How long will you be away from your son?

I'll be gone a week. If he weans I'm ok with that at this point (and I won't be able to pump for a variety of reasons), but honestly I don't think he will since he spent a week with his dad over the summer and didn't wean even though I was really worried he would.

nak

can you hand pump or express just to keep from getting mastitis?

the vaccines should be fine - better check Hales for the malaria meds.

I can hand express a little probably, but I'm not too worried about mastitis since I've never had any problem with it. My son also isn't nursing a ton, so I don't get overly engorged anymore. If I do though I'll hand express at some point.
