something's not right... - Page 2

The rotation diet sounds much more manageable and I will look into starting that. I have started a food journal and plug in when he has a BM. Really that is the only issue I see. No hives, breathing issues, or other discomforts. Even when he's having the BM he doesn't seem uncomfortable. I just know that the output is not right. I have read that there could be other culprits. A virus is one but there is no fever and it's gone for much too long. Also excess drool. He is quite drooly but I want to make sure it's not something in my system.

Hubby doesn't think it's an issue and brought up the idea that maybe having him exposed to his triggers would help bolster his system. Similar to the idea of someone with pollen allergies eating local honey to bolster their system. Could prolonged exposure to triggers be beneficial or more harmful?

Any sleep issues? Excessive ear wax? Gas? Things like that are symptoms to watch out for as well.

If your allergy/intolerance symptoms are gut irritation, then NO- prolonged exposure is not a good idea. That irritation is just doing damage to the villi in the intestines, and the more damage you get, the leakier your gut is... so more food particles can get through. And that can lead to more food allergies!

He sleeps fine as long as he is right next to me. That's a whole other project we are working on. Ear wax...I don't notice any. No nose mucus either. He is gassy sometimes but I don't think it's an abnormal amount. It doesn't seem to be painful and usually means a BM is coming.

I remembered another option to the mucus stool. A foremilk/hindmilk imbalance. I have faced numerous issues while EBF so this may just be another in the line. I don't think that is the culprit but I want to keep all options in mind.

something's not right -> update

We took the little man in today and they have us giving him a probiotic. We also have to collect a sample to see what's going on. Hoing this will clear some stuff up. Anyone have any luck with probiotics?

Usually a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance causes GREEN stools, sometimes with mucus, sometimes without. Make sure you are nursing as long as possible on each side....nurse on one until it's empty and then switch to the other.

Hope you get some answers!!

Which probiotic - most of them are grown on dairy and/or contain FOS/inulin, both of which can be problems for little ones.

Well the samples brought in revealed that little man can't properly digest the sugars in my milk. She suggested I stop BFing and go to formula. At this point I feel that is not an option to me. I am looking to begin eliminating more foods to see if I can clear it up. I kept the dairy and soy out while he began the probiotics to keep an even field so to speak. The probiotic she put him on is acidophilus probiotic blend substituted for floranex tablet. If this is grown using dairy and he's dairy sensitive then I would expect to not see an improvement. I have seen a slight one. So I'm thinking he may not be dairy sensitive and is still reacting to something in my diet. I have a feeling it may be wheat as this is very heavily used in my diet. Going to the store today to pick up gluten free products.

Um...... most formulas have sugar (corn syrup) in them, even the elemental ones.

Are they talking about a lactose (milk sugar) intolerance? Because that is REALLY rare in babies.

Some babies can handle the dairy-based probiotics, some can't. It doesn't necessarily mean that he's ok with dairy though.

How do they even test to say he can't digest the sugars in your milk???

We took several stool samples in and I assume it was through that. I only got a voicemail and haven't called back because I was so upset.

The first ingredient on the sample formula was corn syrup solids, the second was oil...no thank you.

I think I'm on to something. I cut out the little amount of eggs I ate as well as gluten for going on a week now. Poops got better, mainly in the morning and got more mucus as the day went on. I replaced the eggs with oatmeal for breakfast all this week. Now we are back to lots of mucus poop. Still no discomfort or other issues which I am super grateful for. I am guessing oatmeal is triggering something? I am removing that and putting eggs back in. Do you think it's ok to put dairy back in in small amounts? I saw no change when I took it out but I still have not reached baseline. I feel like my diet is suffering a little between being vegetarian, cutting dairy, soy, wheat, and eggs. I am hopeful removing the oatmeal will turn the progress back around. We have another weigh tomorrow. I am assuming that the digestion issues can also cause the small weight gain. So much to wade through...
Thanks ladies!

Oatmeal often has gluten contamination, so that might be the issue. You could try some of the gluten free grains for breakfast, like buckwheat or quinoa (DD really likes quinoa flakes, with a little cinnamon & honey.)

I definitely would not add anything back into your diet if you're not at baseline. Sorry.
