16 month old with egg intolerance. New. Please help.

I have posted this in another forum and the replies I got scared me saying that this could possibly be a life threatening anaphylactic reaction to eggs and that I needed to take her to see a doctor.

Here is what happened:

i have a 16 month old girl. i ate a traditional foods diet when i was pregnant with lots of our own free range eggs and have continued to do so while breastfeeding.

as one of her first foods she ate soft egg yolk at around 7 months. she loved the egg yolk and ate it without problems 2-3x. the fourth time she had the same egg yolk, she vomited 3 hrs after she ate it and continued to dry heave for 2-3 hours. she was pale and lethargic and then went to sleep. she woke up several hours later and nursed and seemed fine. the next day she had a smelly bowel movement but seemed fine otherwise. she had this same reaction a few more times until we figured out it was the egg yolk.

i then stopped the egg yolk and waited until she was 16 months to try again. the first time i tried she had no reaction and loved the egg, same for the following day. She ate raw egg yolk as well as fried.
i thought she had outgrown her egg allergy and then it happened again. same
symptoms as before. she is a healthy little girl without any other allergies. she did not get any vaccinations and she still nurses 3-4x/day.

we have our own chickens and our whole family eats lots of eggs. i would love for her to be able to enjoy eggs since i know how good they are for her.

Has anyone's child had a similar reaction? If so, what can be done? Do children usually outgrow this type of reaction?
I am totally new to allergies. None of my other children have them and neither do my husband and I.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

My son is severely intolerant to eggs as well....itsounds like your little one has an issue with them too. I'm sorry! My son was the same way.....was able to eat them once or twice (on a rotational basis) and then all of a sudden he started reacting to them and we had to pull them completely.

Every kiddo is different.....With some intolerances, they can handle them in small doses on a rotational basis. Since it sounds like she does okay with them the first time you reintroduce them you could try giving one egg every 4-5 days to allow it time for it to leave her system before introducing it to her again. It's a bucket effect....she might be able to handle a bit, and then when you give it again, her bucket fills up, spills over and she has a reaction. If that doesn't work, or if she reacts the next time you give it to her, I would have her allergy tested and remove it from her diet for 6-12 months before trying it again. Allergy testing might not be completely accurate at her age though.

Also, the vomiting and lethargy sounds like it could be an FPIES reaction and it can be dangerous. If it happens again and she becomes pale and lethargic you need to take her to the ER immediately. It means she's possibly going into shock and needs fluids and probably steroids until the reaction passes.

There are lots of egg replacement methods for baking if you need them. Ener-G egg replacer, flax meal, pureed fruits, etc. work great in most recipes.

Have you done any allergy testing? That could very well be a true IgE (anaphylactic) allergy, and if so you need to get an epipen asap. I would NOT try egg again without that.

Thanks for your input. I have made an appointment with an allergist. i am definitely not trying any more egg until i have seen the doctor.

rhesp1212, did your son have similar symptoms? when did his symptoms first appear? what did you do? allergy testing, what type of tests etc?
