Does anyone have recommendations for books that explain how things work? DD#1 is almost 10 and all of a sudden is really interested in learning how things work (mainly the telephone right now). I would think there is probably a series of books dealing with this topic. Thanks!

I looked on amazon and found Telephones, Televisions, and Toilets: How They Work-And What Can Go Wrong. It looked good enough to get a copy for us.

The New Way Things Work by David Macaulay. A great, fun resource and interest-piquer, engagingly written and whimsically illustrated. I think it would be perfect for a 10-year-old.

Edited to add: "Brain Stuff" off the howstuffworks.com website that texmati mentioned might be worth looking at. It's a podcast series, a great collection of short, snappy explanations of how various things work, each about 1-3 minutes long. If you subscribe in iTunes you can browse through a few hundred topics ... laser guns, high speed rail, decaffeination, cell phone transmission, self-setting clocks, and on and on. I often download a few dozen interesting-looking ones to play during long car rides.
