EBF baby, day 4 - no poop since mec passed

My milk just came in yesterday, so we've only had about 24 hours of real feeding. He's wetting regularly, but he is a little dehydrated (tried the heel stick yesterday and he was not hydrated enough to bleed enough).
He had lots of mec diapers in the first day or so, but nothing since then. Lots of farts, and they are a bit stinky, though not a poop smell or anything I can ID, and not offensive.

I'm hoping that the milk is just working through him still, but I am nervous. He's alert, looks great, but no poop.... should I worry, or give him another day?

Have you had him weighed? If you're the worrier type, I would suggest meeting with a lactation consultant to check weight, and latch and all that. (at this age he is probably NOT back to birth weight, but the LC will know if he lost way too much weight, or if there is reason to worry she will probably want to weigh him again in a few days to make sure he's not still losing alot)

If you're not, wait another day. And, you say he's wetting regularly and thats great, but how much? Is the dipe heavy and soaking? It's been a long time since I had a newborn, but I think at this point he should be wetting about 4x per day (once for every day since he was born until 7days, and then he should be wetting at least 6-7times per day). If I'm wrong someone PLEASE correct me, I don't want another mama to get wrong info.

Also, since you are a little worried, how about just trying to nurse a little more? Since your milk is coming in, try to be nursing every 2-3hours during the day (but more is absolutely fine and totally normal if thats what baby wants!) and at least every 3 hours at night. If you can lay down to nurse that will make it easier to nurse more often and for longer at night.

Good job mama!! And congrats on your new baby!!

I would be concerned with no poop in a new born. Enough pees (Thyra was right, 4 heavy wets in 24 hours on day 4) is reassuring. Here is some info about stooling in the newborn: http://www.llli.org/llleaderweb/LV/L...Jan98p123.html

I think Thyra's suggestion of a visit from an LC would be really useful. Checking for milk transfer is important (see videos at www.drjacknewman.com) and also ruling out tongue-tie, funky latch etc.

Hopefully by the time you read this you will have had poop!

I remember going through this with DD1. She didn't poop at all from day four to late in day five, and on day six we were on our way to the pediatrician to discuss it, and she pooped three times on the way over and while we were there. Sometimes I think they wait until you're REALLY worried before they show you they're really fine!
