Way TMI baby poop/constipation question

Don't say I didn't warn you...

My 18-month-old daughter has been constipated for her entire life. She is a finicky eater and will usually eat baby food fruit, but never a whole container in a day. She rarely eats table food. Last night she had a few bites of Spanish rice & refried beans, which is probably one of the worst things she could have eaten, but it was the first time in weeks that she actually ate table food so I let her eat until she wanted to stop. I have tried adding prunes to her diet. She ate them the first time but has turned them away ever since. Once she decides to seal those little lips, there is no convincing her to take another bite. She's been to the chiropractor with some results but I can't take her frequently because of time and money constraints. I'm taking her again today.

She screams every time she poops because her stool is so hard and her little bottom is almost raw and always red. Yesterday she had one that was soft but that's almost worse, because then I have to spend more time wiping her, which hurts her bottom even more. (I've tried prescription cream to no avail and am now moving on to calendula.)

Sometimes she does her "poop cry" but when I change her, I see that she is still trying to go. I have to press her knees up to her chest to help it come out (i.e. squatting position that is so helpful in birth). She hates it but it works. Today not even that would work so I rolled her over and rubbed her back, rolled her on her back again and rubbed her belly, "bicycled" her legs, held her against me with her in a kneeling position, held her in my arms, etc., just trying various positions to see if anything would help. Nothing did and she had a very large stool halfway out. Finally she finally pushed it out when I was bicycling her legs and when she did, I could see squiggly little innards. Is that supposed to happen?? I feel like a brand new mom in a panic about this! It's the second time I've seen that.

Equally TMI response. When I was a kid I had pretty bad constipation and occasionally had felt the squiggly innards come out. I was always told to just push them back in. FWIW it worked ok for me and I have no long term effects. Your poor little one. I hope her digestion improves soon.

Oh, also try having her poop in a warm bath (gross, I know) and rinse insead of wipe. That may help the rawness.
