My DH is super excited to get a chemistry set this yr but I have no idea where to start we need one for little kids in lower elem. He is basically wanting to do experiments and whatnot. I would like a simple kit but one with a guide/book to kinda guide us with things to do (im 9mo pf and the last thing I want to do now is come up w/experiments I basically want to open a book)

any suggestions? Ive seen several online at homesciencetools.com but the descriptions are pretty generic. also I'd like to keep price reasonable (under $100) but something more than overpriced qtips and balloons were looking at the real test tubes/beakers kinda kits

We did the Magic School Bus kit on Germs last year, it had test tubes and all that- as it was on germs, it had a biology slant, but it might be somewhere to start.

Most of our elementary chemistry has been "science in the kitchen" type stuff.

How about Pandia Press's R.E.A.L. Science Odyssey - Chemistry? We actually JUST ordered it today, along with some of the stuff we don't have around the house that we'll need (like petri dishes and thermomenters, etc.)

Look for the "Try Before You Buy" link. My husband viewed it all and said it looked good to him (and he will be the one doing it with our DD who is 7.5).

Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the image of the Chemistry book - it will download a PDF of the first bunch of pages - it will give you a very good idea if it's what you are looking for.

We ordered the book and the supplies we needed from:

They actually sell a kit that supplies the things you may not have around your house, but we didn't get it - we just looked at the list of stuff it included and ordered the few items we didn't have at home - a great way to order everything at once. Do a search around as well, as there is a 10% coupon code for this place which always helps!
