Off And Running

I just watched a documentary called Off And Running about a teen who was adopted.

She's a black track athlete and her parents are a white lesbian couple who are Jewish. There are two other adopted boys in the family: one is an older biracial brother heading off to college and the other is the teen's younger Korean brother. They live in New York.

The central character, Avery/Mycole, decides to contact her biological mother. As a teen, she's struggling with identity issues related to her race and her adoption.

I watched this last night. It was an interesting documentary, but it made my heart ache for everyone involved. What especially broke my heart was Avery/Mychole's moms' resistence to her search. I have an adopted aunt and uncle and several adopted cousins, and their parents expressed similar resistence to their searches, so I've seen it from a distance.

It was really difficult to watch the inner turmoil Avery/Mychole went through when she was searching and didn't seem to have a whole lot of support in her search, or back-up when the family she was searching for seemed so ambivalent.
