Toxoplasmosis

Thread Starter
Hi, I'm 11 weeks pregnant, and a couple of weeks ago I changed kitty litter 3 days in a row. I used double gloves and threw them out right after and washed my hands but i didn't use a mask. We just got our cats from the SPCA one is a kitten who was always indoors and the other is a little older and was abandoned and almost starved to death, but looks great and healthy now. What are the chances of inhaling this parasite? Thank you for your answers I can get a little paranoid.

I think the latest stats give you a higher chance of being struck by lightning.

I don't know if it is possible to inhale it. Its not airborne as far as I know. Just make sure you wash your hands after touching the box (like a normal person would do anyway) and you should be perfectly fine.

If you have had these cats for a while, it's probable that you have already been exposed to toxoplasmosis (way before becoming pregnant) & have developed antibodies to it. These antibodies confer protection to the fetus. However, you should probably talk to your doctor about it.

If you wore gloves and washed your hands you are okay. Toxo can be airborne, but the parasite is only contagious if the poop sat for a least 24 hours. Cats get it from other cats or eating rodents and infected meat, once they have it they only spread it for a couple of days and the they are immune. It is much more likely to get toxo from undercooked meat, raw milk or unwashed veggies.
I have lived with cats all my life, inside and outside cats and I am not immune to it. I sometimes change the litterbox when dh is not home, with gloves and a mask and then wash my hands.
