Learning About Homeschooling

Our DD is a toddler and is home with my DP, which we all love. And we've just started to think ahead about what what we may want to do in a few years. I'd very much like us to home school and my DP is interested in home schooling, but having a hard time picturing it and is interested in learning more about it, starting first with reading more about home schooling. What books would you recommend for a parent who is open and interested in home schooling, but very new to the concept?

I liked Creative Homeschooling for Smart Families by Lisa Rivero. It really gave me a picture of a family's thought process as they decided to homeschool and then how homeschooling looks for a variety of families using a variety of styles, methods, and philosophies.

The HomeSchool Assn. of California (HSC) has a good annotated list of books you can look through: Books about homeschooling and learning. They also have a video that was taken at last year's state conference during which a number of homeschoolers discuss their experiences - you can find it on this page: Homeschooling?! The Movie.

Here's a good thread in this forum: Homeschooling, can we talk? If you just sort of hang around this forum, you'll be seeing lots and lots in the way of what you're looking for.

Home Education Magazine is a wonderful resource - it was a major support for me when I began homeschooling. Life Learning Magazine is another great resource, and a new book they've published, What Really Matters, by David Albert and Joyce Reed, is one of my all time favorite books about homeschooling!

There really isn't all that much to learn about, though - it can all come quite naturally if you don't allow yourself to get swept away with all the overwhelm on the Internet created by people trying to sell you something. You'll be able to just take one thing at a time as your child has a need to learn them - there's no real need to have to pick a "style" or "method" or curriculum, although it will probably be interesting over the next five to seven years just to find out a little about what all is available out there. Have fun! Lillian

I remember being in your shoes many years ago! I think the main thing is to read everything you can get your hands on - books from the library, this forum, and magazines like Home Education as well as some more unschooling magazines (maybe look in that forum for recs). Through reading, the main thing I discovered was that there's no one way to homeschool!

Thanks for starting this thread - we are in the same situation. The full day kindergarten they are currently introducing here is really pushing me to hsing.

Thank you!

Thank you all. I've started reading some of the books and articles and websites recommended as well as more posts in this forum and I'm feeling excited and inspired about homeschooling in the future.
