Nervous--Day 3 Embryo Transfer Tomorrow

I am very new to chatting in this manner, but thankful that I came across mothering.com. I am 27 and have had a mess of infertility problems for the last 13 years. It all started with endometriosis and one problem turned into another. My husband and I began IVF a couple of weeks ago and are preparing for a day 3 transfer tomorrow (Friday, 9/10). I am extremely nervous because I have heard a lot of negative feedback in regards to day 3 transfers. Due to a laparoscopy surgery gone wrong, I only have one ovary and one fallopian tube, which is blocked. My egg retrieval surgery was Tuesday; at that time they harvested 7 eggs. Sadly, however, only 2 of these eggs fertilized. The doctors even performed ICSI. Only having 2 embryos, I am very nervous about our success. I am writing today in hopes that someone may provide reassurance and lift my spirits. I am very thankful that we at least have 2 fertilized embryos, but it was still disappointing to find out that we did not have 4 or 5 as we were expecting. I am also scared of doing a day 3 transfer because I have been told it lowers your success rate for becoming pregnant. Our doctor is wonderful and did provide us with the option for a day 5 transfer, but he highly recommends going through with a day 3 transfer. Any information and/or encouragement would be greatly appreciated. My husband, who is extremely supportive and has been there every step of the way, doesn't understand my disappointment. Thank you and God bless!

I got pregnant on my very first IVF cycle, with a day three transfer. I was nervous about it too, since we'd been offered the option to do either a day three or day five transfer but they called us in for day three since only two of our embryos were developing well and they didn't want to risk going all the way out to day five. We did a single embryo transfer with the one that looked the best, and I got a positive home test several days before I was even scheduled for my beta.

That was back in April, and that day-three embryo is now busy kicking me in the bladder and keeping me up half the night. So it can definitely work! Wishing you all the best for your transfer tomorrow.

I am surprised you have heard negative feedback regarding the 3 day transfer, I read the opposite when I did my IVF.

When we did ours, we had been trying for 6 years, diagnosis was unexplained secondary IF (I already had a child from a different relationship.) We had already done several rounds of clomid and 1 IUI, had a second one cancelled. I have 2 fully functional ovaries, tubes etc. And at egg retreval, we had 8 follicles, but only ended up with 6 eggs, 4 from one ovary and 2 from the other. Of those 6 eggs, only 3 fertilized, with ICSI. I was beyond disappointed, I had REALLY REALLY wanted to be able to freeze some for a frozen try if necessary. Our plan had been to put two back and freeze the rest, but with only 3 and 1 of those looking pretty bad, that wasn't possible. We put all three back, and amazingly, did get a positive test, singlton pg. She's now almost 2 and running around driving me nuts right now.

And, just to offer a little more to the story...when we did the IVF, we were THEN told (after having several SA that didn't find this) that DH had antisperm antibodies, so his swimmers were clumping together and couldn't get anywhere. In addition, they told me my eggs had really thick zonas (shells?) and that made it hard for them to fertilize. So, between the two problems, IVF was pretty much our only option.

Except that I am currently pg, naturally, and due any day now. And while I used to HATE those stories while I was dealing with IF, I know they gave some women hope, so here's hoping for you that this IVF works out great, or that in the end, you don't need any assitance anyway.

My first time IVF, 3dt of only 2 of 7 surviving embies success is asleep in my arms now! good vibes for you!

I know that 5dt embies are hardier and what not, but the womb is still the ideal environment and no Petrie dish will match it!

Thank you!

Thank you so much to those of you who have already responded so quickly. I feel that a burden has been lifted. Hearing success stories from other women who have been in the same position helps tremendously. I was feeling very alone, but now know that there are truly women that are able to relate. I am so happy for all of you and wish you many years of love and joy with your bundles of joy. Thank you for the encouraging words. With every story I read, I feel more hopeful and positive. Keep 'em coming! Lol!

My doctor informed me that they would also be performing Assisted Hatching. Did any of you have this procedure done? Also, my acupuncturist is going to do a treatment at my doctor's office directly before and after the procedure.

Again, thank you for sharing your personal experience and the words of encouragement. It helps more than you know . . . Actually, I'm sure that you do know being that you have all been there. Any last minute advice on what to eat/not eat or what to do/not do?

Thank you,
SamKris
