ouchy breast - what's going on?

i've been nursing dd for almost 7 months. i think i'm getting whiplash from how up and down my supply has been. at first i had low supply (sleepy, jaundiced babe) and took reglan. then i had over supply and ended up with mastitis. recently i had a dip in supply due to stress over a death and then dd started waking 3+ times a night (after sleeping 11 hrs per night for months *sigh*) and all the extra feedings have bumped my supply way up again.

two days ago i had an evening meeting and missed dd's last feeding for the night. i considered pumping but was exhausted when i got home and figured she'd be up in a couple of hours anyway and i would feed her then. of course, she slept through until the morning and i was engorged. i pumped as much as possible on the right while she fed on the left that morning. that day at work i had to put off my last pump for an extra hour and a half because of a meeting and ever since then the tissue in my right breast has really been tender. and somehow i have an abrasion on my areola from the pump flange (not sure how this happened, it's only happened one other time). so my nipple hurts from the abrasion and my breast hurts too.

i'm taking advil to keep the swelling & pain down in the right breast. but i'm wondering what this is. is it mastitis? i don't have the fever and chills like last time but the breast tissue is just so sore.
this has happened a few other times in the same spot on this breast. if my supply is high and i get shorted even once on pumping or a feeding it gets engorged and then sore for a few days. i massage the spot while pumping and have used heat/ice.

i hope someone has some insight for me, i'm off to a full day meeting where i'll only have a couple short breaks to pump.

your problem sounds similar to my problem... i just posted a similar question ... hope this soreness gets resolved!

I'd guess a plugged duct. I'd definitely try to nurse on that side, massage it, use a warm compress, and work it out so that it doesn't turn into mastitis. Maybe fit in an extra pumping session just to make sure to drain that breast, and then hopefully tomorrow or this weekend you can try to get your supply back on track without work interfering! I'm a WOHM, too, and I feel for you!
