DVDs on Autism/ASD

I live overseas in a country where there are NO resources for autism - as in zero. There are speech therapists here and there (no speech pathologists that I know of), one OT (rumor has it) and one behavioral therapist. Because of the laws here they cannot advertise, so it's difficult for parents to find them.

I want to put together an Autism/ASD support group so we can have a method of sharing what's out there, our experiences, etc. and would like to have a few DVDs for our get-togethers. I checked out Amazon.com and found a number of them http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_no...autism&x=0&y=0

Are there any in particular that you would recommend?

TIA!

I saw "Autism: The Musical" when HBO was showing it online. I really liked that one. It was more about helping kids express themselves and embracing who they are without changing them. I'd recommend it to anyone!

I shy away from ones put out by news stations etc because they focus on how its a disorder or disease that's horrible and requires a cure. Obviously I'm more pro-neurodiversity and anti-cure so that colors my opinion a bit, lmao.

In a support group setting you will get people from both camps though, so you have to tread lightly. I'd ask your group members what type of topics they are interested in learning more about and find stuff on those. In the group I was apart of there were people who believed both ways and we still found common ground stuff to focus on.

For example, OT and diet modifications are things many of us struggled or dealt with no matter what our view on Autism was. We were able to benefit from each other's experiences and exchange resources based on those sub-topics that parents with Autistic children deal with.

Another vote for Autism: The Musical! Even though autism ended up not being our final diagnosis I quite enjoyed the DVD and found the message could be applicable to many special needs.

I would recommend looking at some training videos. There are now so many free ones on YouTube by different groups.

The following videos have over 3 hours of training on them, but you have to purchase them. However, they would be very helpful since you don't have trainned professionals in your area:

Social Skills Training and Frustration Management Autism DVD by Dr. Jed Baker
Sensory Issues in Learning & Behavior by Carol Kranowitz
Navigating the Social World Autism DVD by Dr. Jenny McAffe
Exploring Feelings: Cognitive Behaviour Therapy to Manage Anxiety, Sadness, and Anger
by Dr. Tony Attwood

These are instructional videos, some made for people with AS and some about AS, by a father who's son has AS. He also has AS, although he was diagnosed much later in life.

I also want to add that the Temple Grandin movie is awesome too! Even my son loved it and watched it twice.

Absolutely x 1000. It took me a couple viewings of "Autism: The Musical" to warm up to its message (the parents were in such despair! We tend to avoid that angle, for us it is counterproductive...ultimately I was able to break through and see the true directives, but I found it a little unsettling at first) but we found the Temple Grandin movie tremendously inspiring, my DH cried throughout the whole movie, I think he was very relieved to watch someone survive her difficult childhood into success. And to be played by Claire Danes no less, she couldn't have been more fantastic, LOVE LOVE LOVE this movie!

The Horse Boy, on the other hand...wasn't all my style. It's difficult for me to watch parents distance themselves or be afraid of their child with autism. There is one redeeming quality that makes it worthwhile, there is a moment when the father 'gets' it, and finally gets that this about his SON and not about himself, I hope things continue to get better for this family.

Linguisystems has free DVDs for groups of 5 or more:

(Scroll down to section 3. They have CEUs there, too.)

I also like The Transporters, but it's not free.
