I am just food

DS is 5 wks old and I need to hold him all the time. OK, that's what I have a carrier for, right? I have one that is like a mei tei. I like it. But every time I put him in it he immediately wants to nurse, even if he just finished. Then he starts screaming because he can't and I end up back on the couch typing here one handed! Am I doing something wrong? I have a ring sling but don't like it much.

Subscribing, in a similar boat here...

I dont think that there is anything wrong really... at 5 weeks there is no such things as "just finished" nursing. especially being so close to that 6 week growth spurt!

Mine were the same, I took advantage of it and really got them to love being worn during these stages because it helped me not have to be a captive on the couch just nursing all day long.

Do you mean they nursed while in the carrier? Can that be done with the Mei Tai or do I need a certain kind? I'm so tired of being stuck on the couch! If I'm (or DP) not holding him, he'll be crying soon.

yes they did. all ofthe time!

it can certainly be done in a MT! I did it the most in one. Just pop the baby a bit lower/higher so that their head reaches your boobs and latch them on.

You can also use a moby to nurse.

I have yet to find a babywearing device that I cannot nurse in.

Thanks, I'll give it a try. Somegirl, I found some good links putting 'nurse in mei tei' in google.

First of all congrats on getting your LO to nurse in the sling that early on! What freedom!

My DD nursed in the Moby and we had the same problem with her wanting to nurse as soon as I put her in. There is a way, where you can turn your LO head and shoulders away from your body. I couldnt find anywhere online that exlpained exactly how to do it, but imagine keeping his knees against your belly and turning his head and shoulders looking out. It sounds way more uncomfortable than it is. DD loves this position and it kept her from wanting my boob. Also, a lot of times I just pull my boob out from the top of my shirt and give her a little and she would fall right to sleep, then Id put it back in and go about my business.

Good Luck and Congrats on your new baby!

Thanks, I did try it once but I guess I am too short (or short-torsoed) as I had to put him so low it really hurt my back, it wasn't easy to adjust to that position, and that was a few weeks/pounds/inches ago. I'll try again though.

The other problem is that every time we nurse, it results in 2-3 diaper changes, and it's a pain to take him in and out of the mei tai each time and have the straps dangling.

I guess I should start my own thread asking for advice....

neonalee, I hope it works out for you!

Heh. For us it's never ending cycles of feed/cry/spitup/poop/change/cry/spitup/repeat. Going to CVS now for a zantac prescription in fact!

Maybe we should both try a different carrier!

Sounds so familiar! I agree!

Just want to add, nursing in any carrier can be more difficult with larger breasts. I've never been successful at it. Getting one hand free is hard for me!

My DD does the same...it will get better.

With a newborn, I had luck nursing in a ring sling. Once my son was a few months old, I could nurse in a mei tai or SSC. I think nursing in any carrier can take practice. The good news is that 5-6 weeks is still really young, and most babies do start to space out their feedings and diaper-changing-needs before too long. Good luck!

Take consolation that one day you will be promoted to cook, food server and chauffeur.

Sorry it's tough now, I had a hard time with my first, she wouldn't really even take to the sling until she was about 6 weeks old, and then I pretty much had to start walking while she was in it. She always wanted to go somewhere and see something, it seemed. At least that calmed her down. Eventually I got to where I could nurse in the sling, but I used ring slings or wraps, for the most part.

is there any chance you could tie the mei tai a little higher so the babe's head is laying above your breasts on you chest right under your chin and the babe wouldnt want to immediately nurse?

I can tell you that this would not work for my kiddos because they can smell me... they know I am in the vicinity and they wanted to .

Exactly. I've actually had some small success since my last post. DP wore him in the mei tai for several hours saturday and an hour sunday and I was able to wear him for an hour or two after that. I also did ok with the bjorn, though I was told that style isn't good for him, so I'm skipping that one. I also figured out if I feed him during the day on the guest room bed I can carefully slide away when he goes to sleep and do some laundry

I need to make another post, but until then, if anyone has recommendations for a carrier that doesn't hurt my lower back I'd appreciate it. But for now it's time for bed.

Hi neonalee, I just got a wrap (Bali Baby stretch) and so far it is working much better for us than the ring sling or the mei tai.
