We also have lots of symptoms of tongue tie, but I can't even see DS's frenulum. Perhaps there is a posterior tongue tie going on? How do I know, and what should someone who is evaluating this look for?

yup - looks like a lip tie. posterior tongue ties often need a good LC to diagnose.

I think it depends on the doc. My ENT wouldn't clip them outside of the hospital because the risk of bleeding is higher. But some docs will do them in-office. I've heard people have more luck with dentists.

Very interesting. Thanks for posting. I have long wondered if that is what is going on with ds. Nursing is just fine but has never reached a point where it is completely comfortable.

It's something I'll definitely be watching for carefully with any future children.

that's what my ds's looks like and i suspected lip tie as one of the problems with my low supply. By the time i figured it out he 8 months so the professional i contacted didn't think it was worth fixing, his upper lip always tried to go inside his mouth while nursing as well. He is now four and has a wide gap there another indication of lip tie which will probably mean dental work for sure later in life.

Pretty sure ds2 & ds3 have/had lip ties. I don't think it ever affected nursing for them, but it did/does make brushing the top teeth really difficult. Ds2 actually had to have his front top 4 teeth pulled because I couldn't tell I wasn't brushing them properly due to the lip tie.

be sure you flip out the lip each time you feed after the procedure. My ds's reattached as it healed!

Yes, that is a tight labial frenulum. Sadly the LCs and nurses in the hospital didn't notice my DDs tight labial frenulum even though we were having issues. 13 months later I was taking a breast feeding management course and saw a picture of one and said "That's why we can nurse without the nippy!". DD and I nursed with the nipple shield for the whole 25mos we nursed. I really wish it would have been snipped immediately though.

Does your insurance cover it? I'm pretty sure around here it's considered cosmetic. My doctor always steers us away from getting it done because he said one day she'll break it on her own from falling or something. She already has the space between her teeth!

My daughter has both too and neither my doctor nor my dentist thinks it is a problem since she nursed/nurses fine and I don't know if Medicaid will cover it for that reason so I haven't really fought for it yet, but... Dentist said that some ENTs are doing laser on them now, so that is a thought for you.

My doctor always steers us away from getting it done because he said one day she'll break it on her own from falling or something.

DD3 has an upper one too and she did just that and it healed right back up.

I couldnt find an MD who would clip my guys lip tie w/o general anesthesia. So i got a referral to a ped dentist instead. 5 minute procedure, 1 stitch, about $300 out of pocket. Unfortunately it was too late to correct his latch by the time we got it done.

Blah. I really think DD has a lip tie. I didn't notice it until yesterday. I really wish somebody had checked for it when I was having so many nursing problems. They checked for a tongue tie, but not a lip tie. It explains why she never flairs her top lip out while nursing, but instead curls it under. I want to cry knowing that nursing could be easier. But I don't think I'm going to be able to get it clipped without general anesthesia when she's already so old. GRRRRR.

I wonder if it has anything to do with her relatively low weight gain.

yes it can have everything to do with low weight gain, was your baby an april or august baby - it may still be worth getting done - especially if you are in pain. I'd check out your options and then make the decision - you may find someone willing to do it without a general anesthetic.
