Question about sewing a sling

When sewing a baby sling, like the Hip Melon, does the fabric HAVE to have some stretch to it in one direction? I borrowed one and it stretched widthwise. It was nice, but can it be made out of non stretchy material?

I made one with fabric that had a stretch to one side and another sling that the fabric had no stretch at all it worked just fine.

Awesome! Thank you. Because I have non stretch fabric coming out my ears (I'm a bit of a fabric hoarder. Freecycle, etc. LOL) But something with stretch I'd have to go buy.
