I finally got ds, almost 6, in for an OT evaluation yesterday. She confirmed what I mostly knew - that he has sensory processing differences. I've read The Out of Sync Child and Sensational Kids, and I've researched online a bit, and he really fits the profile in a lot of areas (mostly seeking behaviors, but also hyper-/hypo-sensitivities), but he doesn't come off overtly so. Most people say he's just an "active boy," possibly ADHD, just spacey at times, or (the worst for me) defiant.
When the OT was explaining things to me, she was a bit long-winded, which was fine because I knew what she was talking about. But when I try to explain it to people, I get all befuddled. When people argue or look at me like I'm crazy, I get really tripped up and can't articulate it very well. When I try to explain to my husband why it might be worth paying the deductible (twice - now and with the new calendar year), he doesn't really argue, but I can see his hesitance.
So how do you explain it succinctly and so you don't sound like someone just looking for something to be wrong? What about when they argue the "active boy" or medication or behavior modification bits? TIA
