For maybe 3-4 months I've been having what I thought was engorgement in my right breast. My "baby" is 3yo (tomorrow!) and nurses anywhere from 1 to maybe 5x per day, usually not more than that.
Initially the pain started when I wore a cami-style shelf bra that was a bit snug. After wearing it for a few hours I'd start to feel a sharp pain radiating from my nipple on the right side. I quit wearing those bras in favor of my nice loose Bravado. After a while I started having pain in that breast in the middle of the night. I usually sleep on my belly and I'd wake up feeling like my nipple was being smooshed. The right breast is typically the nurse to sleep and nurse to wake up side, so I figured it was engorgement on that side because it was the one getting used the most.
Then a few weeks ago I noticed a tender, painful spot deep inside on the bottom of my breast, and my breast often feels like I'm having a letdown - that tingly feeling. I thought it was a plugged duct and have been trying to massage it, especially when DS nurses on that side, to break up the plug. The spot has been quite painful if I touch it or it gets bumped, and starting today the spot is beginning to hurt even if I don't touch it and most of my breast and nipple are very tender to the touch.
The right breast is also getting that veiny look that happens when I'm pregnant, and it's noticeably bigger than my left breast, which I first noticed when I went bra shopping a few weeks ago.
There's no chance I'm pregnant.
I mentioned what's been going on to my mom, who nursed for 7 yrs (4 kids total) and she was stumped. Anyone else had something similar? Should I be concerned or just chalk it up to the weaning process since DS has been cutting back on nursing lately?
