Natural House Plant Fertilizers?

Thread Starter
I need some ideas for natural fertilizers for my indoor plants, especially my Ficus alii - definitely in need of some nitrogen.

We have chickens, so I could use some well composted chicken poop, but I wonder about any safety concerns? I'm pretty laid back about potential germs - we eat our eggs raw, raw beef liver, raw milk, etc - but the kids could, in theory, end up playing in the soil. This doesn't really worry me, but like I said, I'm not the worrying type when it comes to this stuff.
I don't think there would be an odor, do you?

Any other ideas?

Im not the one to ask about the chickens, but for great houseplant fertilizer you could do indoor composting with red worms and use the casings in your plants.

It's not the answer that you're looking for, but I decided for my decorative houseplants that I was just going to use conventional fertilizer on them. I do use organic potting soil.

ETA: Some of the reasons I see houseplants so differently is because they're separated from the normal watershed, and they don't have quite the same beetle and earthworm action to open up the soil and transport nutrients. At least, I hope not. I hope they have plenty of good microorganisms.

I do worry more about my herbs that I would use for cooking, except that herbs generally do well in poor soil.
