Help with pain from separation

My intact 18 month old is grabbing at his penis and crying in pain. It is red and swollen but from what i can tell it seems to be normal separation symptoms. Is there anything I can do to support the process or for pain management? Anything else I should know?

A good start is to just pop him in a bath.

I might also be diaper rash, so you could put a little cream on it (we used Burt's bees diaper cream.)

If you can get him to pee with his penis submerged in water it might help by diluting the urine and making it sting the raw skin less.

Thank you both. While it's red it does not appear raw. He has no signs of diaper rash. We let him go diaper free and he is happily taking a bath. I've watched him pee and doesn't seem to mind peeing. It is still red and swollen. Also when I took off his last diaper there was white stuff in his diaper and on his penis... Smegma? Or should I think yeast or something?

If it was smegma then he should start to feel better very soon if it was yeast then things wont get better on their own. Keep an eye on things and if he isnt back to normal in another day then use some otc monistat or nystatin and see if that helps. (what I would do anyway)

It does seem improved. The tip is a little red and it's slightly swollen but nothing compared to yesterday. Thanks for the reassurance!
